A shocking incident of armed robbery and gang-rape has sent waves of indignation through the community of Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar. In the early hours of Monday, 8 June, a gang of armed miscreants broke into a local residence, looting valuable assets before brutally assaulting a mother and her school-aged daughter. Law enforcement agencies, bolstered by local residents, have launched a swift crackdown, detaining six suspects in connection with the heinous crime.
According to local sources, the targeted attack occurred between 2:30 am and 3:00 am. An armed gang, estimated to consist of eight to ten individuals, breached the security of the household by cutting through the iron grilles of a window. Once inside, the perpetrators held the family at gunpoint, systematically plundering the home. They fled with a significant amount of cash, gold jewellery, and other valuable belongings.
However, the ordeal did not end with the theft. Before making their escape, the intruders subjected the mother and her young daughter, a local school student, to a horrific gang-rape, leaving them severely traumatised and physically injured.
The aftermath of the attack left the area in a state of profound shock. Upon receiving the grim news, multiple teams from the Matamuhuri Investigation Centre and Chakaria Police Station rushed to the scene to initiate inquiries.
The victims, found bleeding heavily, were immediately rescued and rushed to the Chakaria Upazila Health Complex. As their physical condition rapidly deteriorated due to severe trauma and blood loss, doctors ordered an urgent transfer to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced medical intervention.
“My niece’s condition remains exceptionally critical,” stated Saidul Islam Maruf, the young victim’s uncle. “The doctors have placed her under intensive observation due to excessive internal bleeding, and we are all praying for her survival.”
Following the incident, outraged residents joined forces with law enforcement, cordoning off the entire locality. A coordinated manhunt launched at dawn on Tuesday resulted in the apprehension of six suspects by mid-morning.
Mohammad Masud, the In-charge of the Matamuhuri Investigation Centre, confirmed the veracity of both the robbery and the gang-rape. Meanwhile, Monir Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station, confirmed that the six detained individuals are currently undergoing rigorous interrogation to extract further details about the remaining accomplices.
The atrocity has sparked widespread fury across Cox’s Bazar, with community leaders and residents staging protests to demand the fastest possible trial and exemplary, maximum punishment for the perpetrators.
