Two Arrested for Extortion and Sexual Assault

The Sonaimuri police have arrested two men on charges of sexually assaulting an expatriate’s wife, recording the acts without consent, and subsequently blackmailing her. The detainees have been identified as Md. Shafiqul Islam Saikat, aged 28, and Ibrahim Khalil Jewel, aged 35. According to the Sonaimuri police, both individuals were forwarded to the Noakhali Magistrate Court on Wednesday morning (9 June).

Investigation and Sequential Events

Local and police sources revealed that Saikat first encountered the victim whilst she was employed at a local burqa shop. This initial acquaintance developed into a closer relationship over time. Saikat subsequently engaged in multiple sexual encounters with the victim under the false pretext of marriage.

During these occurrences, Saikat secretly recorded video footage of the acts to utilize as leverage for extortion. He proceeded to send the explicit footage to the victim’s husband, who resides abroad, thereby disclosing the affair. By deploying threats of circulating the material further, Saikat successfully extorted a total sum of 370,000 BDT from the victim across various intervals. He subsequently demanded an additional 500,000 BDT, threatening to distribute the footage across various social media platforms if the amount was not paid.

In an attempt to secure assistance and protection from the ongoing extortion, the victim approached her neighbour, Ibrahim Khalil Jewel. However, instead of providing aid, Jewel intercepted and obtained the recorded footage to initiate his own blackmail campaign against the victim. Jewel subsequently forwarded the explicit material to both the victim’s husband and members of her in-laws’ household. Distressed by the continuous harassment, the victim attempted suicide on 7 June. Local residents intervened, rescued her, and admitted her to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Law Enforcement Response and Actions

Following a formal complaint, the police executed coordinated raids on Tuesday night. Saikat was apprehended at his business establishment, “Dubai Burqa House,” located in the Sonaimuri bazaar. Concurrently, Jewel was arrested at his shop, “Jewel Furniture,” situated within the same sub-district.

Confirming the details of the case, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Nasrin Akter, stated that upon receiving the formal complaint, the matter was immediately referred to the local police station. A formal case has been registered at the Sonaimuri Police Station, and administrative steps will be pursued to ensure the maximum statutory punishment for the perpetrators.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonaimuri Police Station, Kabir Hossain, confirmed that the law enforcement team apprehended both primary suspects based on the initial verification of the complaint. He added that the suspects have been placed into judicial custody. Furthermore, an investigation is actively underway to determine if any other individuals were complicit in the extortion or distribution of the material, with assurances that any additional associates discovered will face legal prosecution.
