Thirteen Killed In Pakistani Airstrikes On Afghanistan

Thirteen Killed In Pakistani Airstrikes On Afghanistan

At least thirteen individuals, including eleven children, have been killed following a series of military airstrikes executed by the Pakistani Air Force across three separate provinces in Afghanistan. The cross-border aerial bombardment also left at least fourteen other individuals wounded, all of whom have been verified as women and children, according to initial casualty figures released by regional administrators.

The casualties and structural details of the targeted areas were formally confirmed on Wednesday, 10 June, by Zabihullah Mujahid, the official spokesman for the caretaker Taliban administration in Kabul. The military operation has heightened diplomatic and security frictions between the two neighbouring South Asian nations, raising concerns over international border sovereignty and the protection of non-combatants in conflict zones.

Violations of Airspace and Targeted Localities

According to the official statements issued by the Taliban government’s spokesperson, the Pakistani Air Force explicitly violated Afghan sovereign airspace to conduct these coordinated aerial operations. The fighter jets and military assets targeted civilian-populated residential areas situated within three distinct eastern and south-eastern border provinces of Afghanistan:

  • Kunar Province: Located in the mountainous northeastern region along the Durand Line.

  • Khost Province: A major eastern border province historically prone to cross-border tensions.

  • Paktika Province: Situated in the southeastern sector, adjacent to Pakistan’s tribal regions.

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid emphasised that the casualties resulting from the multi-province bombardment were exclusively ordinary, unarmed citizens. The administration stated that no military infrastructure or combatant outposts were involved in the immediate vicinities targeted by the aircraft weapons systems.

Strategic Assertions and Bilateral Allegations

The Pakistan Armed Forces and the federal government in Islamabad have not yet released an official public statement regarding the specific flight paths, munitions used, or the precise death toll of the operation. However, high-level Pakistani security sources, speaking anonymously to the Reuters news agency, verified the execution of the aerial missions. The security sources asserted that the cross-border operation was launched to target and neutralise active sanctuaries of banned militant and terrorist networks operating from within Afghan territory.

For a significant duration, Pakistan has consistently leveled diplomatic and military complaints against the Taliban administration in Kabul. Islamabad maintains that the Afghan authorities are providing safe havens and logistical freedom to militant factions that routinely cross the porous international border to launch lethal attacks inside Pakistan. Conversely, the Taliban leadership has repeatedly rejected these claims, counter-arguing that Pakistan’s domestic terrorism challenges are entirely internal security matters that Islamabad must resolve within its own borders without externalizing blame.

Breakdown of Ceasefire and Escalating Casualties

This latest aerial bombardment threatens to completely dismantle the fragile bilateral truce that had been established recently between Kabul and Islamabad. The border regions had witnessed severe military clashes and heavy artillery exchanges earlier this year in February. Following those skirmishes, diplomatic interventions led by China resulted in both nations agreeing to a formal ceasefire framework in March.

The vulnerability of the border populations is further highlighted by data compiled by international observers. According to a recent statistical report published by the United Nations, cross-border skirmishes along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier have taken a heavy toll on civilians. In the first three months of this year alone, the conflict resulted in the deaths of at least 372 Afghan civilians, while an additional 397 individuals sustained documented injuries. The latest strikes on Kunar, Khost, and Paktika signify a direct breach of the March mediation agreement, escalating the threat of renewed conventional military mobilization along the frontier.
