Savar Model Thana police have apprehended 24 individuals, including five primary suspects named in a first information report (FIR), following an assault on law enforcement officials. The remaining 19 detainees were arrested on outstanding judicial warrants and charges relating to murder, narcotics distribution, theft, and attempted murder.
The extensive operation was confirmed on Thursday morning, 11 June, by Inspector (Investigation) Nur Mohammad of Savar Model Thana. The coordinated law enforcement sweeps commenced on Wednesday afternoon and concluded in the early hours of Thursday, focusing primarily on the Savar Bede Para area.
According to official police and local intelligence sources, the confrontation originated on the evening of 9 June. Acting on verified information, a police detachment from Savar Model Thana launched an operation to apprehend a fugitive and designated narcotics dealer. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Mo. Rafiqul Islam, son of Mo. Abdur Rahim, resides in the Boktarpur Porabari area of Ward 1 within Savar Municipality.
At approximately 7:40 PM, officers successfully located and attempted to detain Islam near the Boktarpur Balur Math area. Upon being cornered, Islam shouted to summon his associates, quickly gathering a crowd of over 50 local individuals. The gathering actively obstructed the statutory police operation, creating significant public disorder.
Despite the officers formally identifying themselves and attempting to de-escalate the situation, the crowd turned violent under Islam’s direction. Sub-Inspector (SI) SM Shamim and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mashiur Rahman of Savar Model Thana were severely assaulted with wooden sticks, iron rods, and other domestic weapons. When both officers fell to the ground due to injuries, the assailants continued the assault and issued verbal threats, warning that law enforcement personnel would face severe retribution if any further arrests were attempted in the area.
The assailants fled the scene only after reinforcement units arrived at the location. The two injured officers were immediately evacuated and admitted to Savar Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Following directives from Dhaka District Police headquarters, Savar Model Thana police escalated intelligence surveillance and initiated a targeted sweep. The operation led to the direct arrest of five primary suspects explicitly named in the police assault case file.
The five primary suspects have been identified as:
Ariful Islam (20): Son of Mo. Ratan, resident of the Kanchanpur area, Ward 1, Savar Municipality.
Sagar Miah (23): Son of Mo. Mohir Uddin, from the same locality.
Mo. Maruf (20): Son of Golam Hossain, resident of the Boktarpur Three-Way Intersection area.
Mo. Humayun (19): Son of Mo. Hasan, resident of the Porabari area.
