Indian leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam has been accused of sexual and physical abuse by a woman from Hyderabad, with the allegations emerging at a significant point in the 22-year-old cricketer’s career.
Nigam has been handed an opportunity at international level after spinner Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out of the Asian Games because of injury. Before the Asian Games, Nigam could also make his T20 international debut against Japan in the one-off match.
The allegations have surfaced just as the young spinner is preparing for what could be an important milestone in his cricketing career. According to a report by Indian media outlet News18, the woman recently went to Nigam’s residence and remained there, insisting that she wanted to meet him in person.
The woman reportedly said she would not leave until she had spoken directly to Nigam. However, the 22-year-old was in Japan with the Indian squad at the time. Unable to meet him, she eventually left the location.
News18 also reported that Nigam’s father recently spoke to the woman by telephone. He is said to have assured her that the matter would be discussed after a week. The woman reportedly told him that she did not want to create a dispute and only wanted an opportunity to speak directly with Nigam.
According to the woman’s allegation, she first met Nigam through social media in May 2025. She claims that their relationship subsequently became physical after Nigam allegedly promised to marry her.
She further alleged that on 29 July 2025, Nigam took her to a hotel in Noida, where she was subjected to sexual and physical abuse. A complaint was subsequently made at the Expressway police station in Gautam Buddh Nagar district. The case was registered on 16 December 2025, according to the report.
Nigam has also lodged a complaint in connection with the dispute. In a complaint filed at Barabanki Kotwali police station on 8 November 2025, he alleged that he had received threatening calls from different mobile numbers. He claimed that the woman had threatened to implicate him in false cases.
The two sides have therefore presented competing allegations, and the claims against Nigam have not been established as fact through a court ruling. The progress of the legal process and statements from the parties involved will be important in determining how the matter develops.
Away from the controversy, Nigam has been making progress in domestic and franchise cricket. A leg-spinner by trade, he is also capable of contributing with the bat. He has represented Uttar Pradesh in six first-class matches.
Nigam has also featured for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, where he has played 19 matches and taken 13 wickets. His performances in domestic and franchise cricket have helped him move closer to the international set-up.
With Chakravarthy’s injury creating an opening in the Asian Games squad, Nigam has found himself on the verge of a major career opportunity. A debut against Japan would add another significant milestone to his record.
For now, however, the allegations have brought an unexpected layer of scrutiny at a crucial stage of his career. The legal proceedings and any further statements from those involved are likely to determine the next developments in the case.
