Police Officers Injured in Sher-e-Bangla Attack

Two members of the police force were injured after being stabbed by suspected muggers during a late-night patrol in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital on Thursday. Law enforcement officers later detained two suspects in connection with the incident, while another remains at large.

The injured officers have been identified as Sub-Inspector Samsujjoha Sarkar (34) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station and Constable Hridoy Barua (20) from the Public Order Management unit. Both were engaged in routine patrol duties when the attack occurred.

According to police accounts, the incident unfolded around 1:00am after officers received intelligence that a group of muggers was preparing to carry out robberies near the Glass Bridge in the capital’s Jatiya Sangsad Garden area. A patrol team was immediately dispatched to the location.

Upon arrival, the officers observed suspicious movement and attempted to intercept the suspects, who were reportedly attempting to flee in an auto-rickshaw. A motorcycle-based police unit pursued the group in an effort to apprehend them.

During the chase, the suspects allegedly launched a sudden counterattack using sharp weapons. Sub-Inspector Sarkar sustained injuries to his left shoulder, while Constable Barua was stabbed under his left armpit. Despite their injuries, the officers’ pursuit continued briefly before the suspects escaped in the auto-rickshaw.

Both injured officers were first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Due to the severity of their condition, they were later transferred around 2:30am to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Police confirmed that two individuals suspected of involvement in the attempted mugging have since been detained. However, at least one additional suspect managed to flee the scene, and efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him.

A senior officer at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station stated that additional patrols and intelligence operations have been intensified in the area following the incident to prevent further criminal activity.
