Remittance Inflows Surge in June

Bangladesh recorded a strong rise in remittance inflows during the first ten days of June, reflecting sustained growth in expatriate earnings and continued confidence among overseas workers in formal banking channels.

According to data released on Friday by spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan of the Bangladesh Bank, the country received approximately US$1.2031 billion in remittances between 1 and 10 June. This translates to an average daily inflow of around US$120.31 million, indicating robust short-term momentum in foreign currency earnings.

In the same period last year, remittance inflows stood at US$956.19 million, highlighting a significant year-on-year increase. Overall, remittance growth during the current fiscal cycle has been notably strong, supported by structural shifts such as increased use of legal remittance channels and improved incentives for expatriate workers.

From July to 10 June of the current fiscal year, total remittance inflows reached approximately US$33.96 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 19.31 per cent. This sustained growth underscores remittances as one of the most important pillars of the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

Monthly performance over the past year shows considerable fluctuations, with several months reaching historic highs. May recorded the second-highest monthly inflow in the country’s history, while March set a new all-time record. Despite seasonal variations, inflows have remained consistently strong above the US$2.4 billion mark in most months.

Monthly Remittance Trend (FY Overview)

Month Remittance (US$ million) Notable Detail
March 3,755.05 Highest on record
May 3,425.03 Second highest ever
April 3,127.30 Strong inflow
February 3,020.76 Stable growth
January 3,170.94 Solid performance
December 3,226.70 High inflow period
November 2,889.52 Moderate rise
October 2,563.48 Lower range
September 2,685.88 Gradual increase
August 2,421.89 Early fiscal period
July 2,478.00 Start of fiscal year

In addition, the full fiscal year 2024–25 closed with record remittance inflows of approximately US$30.32 billion, the highest ever recorded in a single financial year in the country’s history. This milestone reflects both structural resilience in the labour migration sector and continued reliance on overseas earnings to support domestic consumption, import payments, and macroeconomic stability.

Economists note that sustained remittance growth plays a crucial role in stabilising the balance of payments, supporting currency liquidity, and easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves. If current trends persist, the country may continue to see strong inflows in the coming months, particularly during festive and seasonal remittance cycles.
