Attempted Donation Theft at Monastery

A young man wearing a Brazil national football team jersey was caught red-handed while attempting to steal a donation box from the main shrine of Rajban Vihara in southeastern Bangladesh. The incident, which occurred early on Thursday morning, has prompted renewed discussion about security arrangements at the historic religious site.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect, a resident of Mahalchhari in Khagrachhari district, entered the monastery premises around 6:00 a.m. at a time when members of the monastic community were engaged in their morning alms meal. Taking advantage of the reduced presence inside the shrine, he allegedly attempted to remove the donation box from the main sanctum.

However, his actions did not go unnoticed. Devotees and visitors present at the site quickly became suspicious and intervened before he could escape. He was apprehended on the spot and handed over to the monastery authorities.

Representatives of the Rajban Vihara Upasak-Upasika Council confirmed the incident, stating that the young man admitted his wrongdoing shortly after being detained. He expressed remorse and assured the authorities that he would not engage in such activities again. Following his written undertaking, commonly referred to as a bond of good conduct, he was released without being handed over to law enforcement.
