Woman Dies Following Brutal Street Robbery In Dhaka

A 42-year-old woman has tragically passed away in hospital four days after being violently pulled from a moving rickshaw by motorcycle-borne muggers in Dhaka. The victim, identified as Soheli Islam, was a medical services officer employed by the SK+F pharmaceutical company. The fatal incident occurred early on Sunday morning near the main gates of the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, leaving her undergraduate daughter profoundly traumatised.

The victim originally hailed from Parbatipur Upazila under the Dinajpur District but resided in a rented flat located near Green Road in the Dhanmondi area of the capital. According to relatives, Soheli and her daughter had travelled to Parbatipur to attend a family function. Upon the conclusion of the event, they boarded a Dhaka-bound bus on Saturday night, 6 June, at approximately 9:00 pm.

Violent Mugging Incited Fatal Injuries On The Roadway

The bus arrived at the Gabtoli terminal in Dhaka around 5:00 am on Sunday, after which the mother and daughter waited inside the counter area for nearly an hour. At approximately 6:00 am, they hired a cycle rickshaw to travel back to their residence in Dhanmondi. As their rickshaw crossed the entrance of the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital at roughly 6:15 am, two muggers wearing protective helmets approached them on a motorcycle.

The individual seated at the rear of the motorcycle suddenly grabbed the vanity bag that Soheli had wrapped around her hand and began pulling it with considerable force. Due to the intense tugging, Soheli lost her balance and fell heavily from the moving rickshaw onto the tarmac. The impact fractured her right arm and caused severe trauma to the back of her head, resulting in immediate and heavy bleeding from her ears.

Hospital Transfers And Absence of Immediate Medical Support

Following the fall, the victim’s daughter desperately sought help from bystanders, but initial appeals for assistance went ignored by onlookers. Eventually, with the joint cooperation of the rickshaw puller and a passerby, Soheli was rushed into the emergency department of the adjacent Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

As her neurological condition deteriorated, she was subsequently transferred to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital for specialized critical care. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Dhanmondi, but doctors were unable to reverse the extensive internal damage. Relatives noted that by the time she arrived at the final facility, she had lost the ability to articulate speech and could only emit low groans. Soheli succumbed to her injuries on Thursday morning. Her body was transported to her maternal grandfather’s home in the Paschim Tengri area of Ishwardi Upazila under the Pabna District, where her burial rites were completed on Thursday afternoon.

Police Procedures And Socioeconomic Impact of Street Crimes

According to the victim’s brother-in-law, Tarikul Islam, the grieving family has not yet initiated any formal criminal case or filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the local police station due to their current state of shock. Legal actions are expected to be pursued once the situation stabilizes.

Street robberies, locally termed as chintai, represent a persistent urban security challenge in metropolitan Dhaka, frequently occurring during the quiet, early morning hours when police patrolling is reduced and public transport passengers arrive from distant districts. Muggers routinely target vulnerable commuters traveling on open cycle rickshaws, deploying fast-moving motorbikes to snatch bags and jewellery, which regularly causes passengers to fall onto the hard road surfaces, inflicting fatal head trauma. Under the Bangladesh Penal Code, such incidents are prosecuted under sections relating to robbery, voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery, or culpable homicide, carrying stringent penalties including rigorous life imprisonment or capital punishment depending on the severity of the casualties.
