A murder investigation has been initiated in the Mexican city of Tijuana after a decomposing body was found in an abandoned vehicle outside the Iran national football team’s training base. The squad has been conducting its pre-World Cup preparations in the city under strict security protocols.
The Iranian delegation is currently housed at the Marriott Hotel, located near the Caliente Stadium where the players undergo daily training sessions. On Friday, 12 June, police were called to a supermarket parking lot situated directly opposite the stadium. A grey Toyota SUV had been left abandoned at the site since the preceding Wednesday, and local residents had reported a strong odour emanating from the vehicle.
Upon forcing entry into the vehicle’s boot, Mexican police officers discovered the remains wrapped inside a heavy black plastic bag. The Tijuana prosecutor’s office subsequently confirmed to the news agency AFP that the body bore explicit signs of physical trauma and violence.
A specialized forensic unit, arriving in protective suits, conducted a rigorous examination of the vehicle to gather evidence for the post-mortem report. Following the on-site investigation, the body was removed from the scene for formal identification and autopsy.
The location of the Iranian training camp is a direct consequence of recent international developments. The team had originally scheduled its pre-World Cup preparations to take place inside the United States. However, escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran forced the football federation to abandon those arrangements at short notice. Consequently, the team established its alternative training headquarters in Tijuana, Mexico.
