A tragic road traffic accident in the Borhanuddin Upazila of Bhola district has claimed the life of a young football fan. Md Ismail, aged 22, was killed whilst travelling to participate in a celebratory procession organised by local supporters of the Brazil national football team. The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon at approximately 5:15 pm in the Daulatkhan Rastarmatha area of the upazila.
The collision also resulted in severe injuries to a pedestrian named Sabuj, who was struck by the out-of-control motorcycle. Following the casualty, the scheduled rally was temporarily suspended by the organisers.
According to local sources, supporters of the Brazilian football team had organised a celebratory rally, which was scheduled to commence at approximately 4:00 pm. Md Ismail, an ardent supporter of the team and a resident of the Chokdhosh village within the Kachia Union of Borhanuddin Upazila, set off from his home on a motorcycle to join the gathering in the town centre. He was the son of Md Maksud from the local Chowkidar Bari.
As Ismail was navigating his way towards the procession, his speeding motorcycle reached the Daulatkhan Rastarmatha area. Witness accounts and local sources indicate that the motorcycle was being operated at a reckless speed. Consequently, Ismail lost control of the vehicle, which then veered off course and struck Sabuj, a pedestrian who was walking along the side of the road.
Following the impact with the pedestrian, the motorcycle plunged into a roadside ditch. The force of the crash left both the rider and the pedestrian with catastrophic injuries.
Local residents and eyewitnesses rushed to the scene immediately after the crash to conduct a rescue operation. Both Ismail and Sabuj were retrieved from the roadside ditch and the surrounding area. They were swiftly transported to the Borhanuddin Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical attention.
Upon arrival at the medical facility, the on-duty physician, Dr Rafsana Nishat, examined Ismail and pronounced him dead. Sabuj, the pedestrian, received emergency first aid at the upazila hospital. However, due to the critical nature of his injuries, medical staff determined that he required advanced clinical care. He was subsequently transferred to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barisal for specialised treatment.
