A nineteen-year-old woman, identified as Shivani, has died in hospital after being brutally assaulted by her parents with a sharp weapon inside a police station in the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The fatal attack occurred after the young woman refused to dissolve her self-chosen marriage and return home with her biological family.
According to official police reports, the incident began on 18 May when Shivani left her family home alongside her neighbour, a young man identified as Lalit Verma. Following their departure, the couple solemnised their marriage at a temple and subsequently completed the legal registration protocols to validate their union.
Shivani’s family completely rejected the relationship and formally lodged an abduction case against Lalit Verma at the local police station. Following the registration of the criminal case, law enforcement authorities initiated a search operation to locate the missing couple. Acting on a covert tip-off, the police tracked the couple to the Satna district of neighbouring Madhya Pradesh on Friday, from where they were retrieved and escorted back to the Banda police station for administrative procedures.
During the police interrogation, the couple explicitly informed the handling officers that they had entered into the marriage voluntarily as consenting adults. To substantiate their claims, they formally submitted all necessary legal marriage documentation and official papers to the police personnel on duty.
As the law enforcement officials prepared to record Shivani’s legal statement and arrange for her mandatory medical examination, members of both families arrived at the police station upon receiving information about their presence. In an attempt to manage the volatile situation and foster a peaceful resolution, the police arranged a mediation meeting involving both parties.
During this discussion, Shivani’s parents repeatedly exerted pressure on her to sever all marital ties with Lalit Verma and return to her paternal home immediately. However, Shivani firmly clarified her position to everyone present, stating unequivocally that she would remain with her husband. This refusal led to a heated verbal altercation between the family members, causing the situation to escalate.
During the argument, the interaction turned violent within the police premises. According to the police account, Shivani’s mother, Ranno, suddenly caught her daughter from behind and held her firmly to prevent any movement.
Taking advantage of this restraint, Shivani’s father drew a sharp knife from his pocket and launched a direct physical assault on his daughter. In the immediate presence of the on-duty police personnel, the father repeatedly stabbed and slashed the young woman across her abdomen, arms, and palms. The sudden nature of the physical attack left the present police officers momentarily stunned.
Law enforcement personnel subsequently intervened, secured the bleeding victim, and rushed her to a nearby local hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, due to the severe nature of the internal and external wounds she sustained, Shivani succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the medical facility.
The Superintendent of Police for Banda District, Palash Bansal, confirmed the details of the incident to media outlets. He stated that a formal murder case has been registered under the relevant sections of the law. Following the fatal attack, police teams conducted an immediate operation and successfully arrested the accused father. A thorough investigation is currently underway to assess the security lapses and review the complete details of the case.
