A five-year-old child has been found dead in the Kangsa River in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh district, several hours after being reported missing from near her home. Authorities suspect that the victim may have been subjected to sexual assault followed by murder, although this remains under investigation and has not yet been confirmed through post-mortem examination.
According to police and family accounts, the child went missing at around 5:00 pm on Sunday after leaving her residence shortly after having tea and biscuits. Family members initially searched surrounding areas but were unable to locate her. Approximately two and a half hours later, at around 7:30 pm, local residents spotted a body floating in a bend of the Kangsa River, roughly 500 yards from the child’s home.
Following the discovery, family members rushed to the scene and identified the body. The remains were subsequently recovered. At that stage, the family had initially considered the possibility of a natural death and began preparing for burial rites.
However, during ritual washing of the body later that night, relatives observed injuries on sensitive parts of the child’s body. This prompted them to halt burial arrangements and inform the police.
Police officers arrived at the location around 12:30 am. After conducting an inquest at the scene, they took custody of the body and transported it to the police station. On Monday morning, the remains were sent to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The child’s father stated that his daughter had left home after eating and that her body was discovered later in the evening. He expressed shock at the incident and questioned how such an act could occur involving his young child.
The officer-in-charge of Dhobaura Police Station, Shafiqul Islam, stated that preliminary suspicion indicates the child may have been subjected to sexual assault before being killed and her body disposed of in the river. He added that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is working to determine those responsible and that necessary legal procedures are underway.
