Fifteen-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recently garnered significant attention for his explosive batting performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has found himself at the centre of a controversy. The young batsman made headlines after physically confronting a Sri Lankan player during a match between India ‘A’ and Sri Lanka ‘A’. The incident occurred yesterday in Dambulla, amidst an ongoing tri-series that features the ‘A’ teams of India, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.
The match, held in Dambulla, concluded with a dramatic and highly competitive finish. Batting first, India ‘A’ posted a total of 265 runs. In reply, the Sri Lanka ‘A’ innings concluded at 265 for the loss of 9 wickets, resulting in a rare tie at the end of the regulation overs.
To determine the winner, the match progressed to a Super Over. Sri Lanka ‘A’ batted first in the tie-breaker, setting a challenging target by scoring 16 runs. In response, India ‘A’ designated Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge to open the batting. However, the Indian pair failed to chase down the target, managing to score only 9 runs. Consequently, Sri Lanka ‘A’ secured a 7-run victory in the Super Over.
The final scores of both the main match and the deciding Super Over are detailed in the table below:
| Match Phase | Team | Runs Scored | Wickets Lost | Final Outcome |
| Main Innings | India ‘A’ | 265 | – | Match Tied |
| Main Innings | Sri Lanka ‘A’ | 265 | 9 | Match Tied |
| Super Over | Sri Lanka ‘A’ | 16 | 0 | Sri Lanka ‘A’ won by 7 runs |
| Super Over | India ‘A’ | 9 | – | India ‘A’ defeated |
The friction between the two sides erupted immediately after the conclusion of the Super Over, as Suryavanshi and Shedge were walking off the field following their defeat. Sri Lankan players Brawen Halambage and Wanuja Sahan approached the departing Indian batsmen and exchanged words with them. According to a report published by the prominent Indian cricket portal Cricbuzz, Halambage directed a provocative remark at Suryavanshi, stating, “The match is over… now go home.”
Suryavanshi took exception to the comment. The teenage batsman turned around, retraced his steps towards Halambage, and deliberately shoved the Sri Lankan cricketer. Halambage reacted instantly by pushing Suryavanshi’s hand away.
To prevent the altercation from escalating further, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella intervened promptly and defused the tension between the players. Despite the intervention, Suryavanshi continued to manifest his anger, gesticulating aggressively with his hands as he exited the playing arena toward the dressing room.
Following the conclusion of the fixture, multiple video recordings documenting the verbal altercation and the subsequent physical confrontation began circulating extensively across various social media platforms. The tri-series remains underway in Sri Lanka, with the ‘A’ teams of India, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan competing against one another.
