Border Tension at Sylhet Frontier

Tension has arisen along the Northkul border area of Zakiganj upazila in Sylhet following the reported disappearance of a Bangladeshi youth inside Indian territory and the subsequent recovery and handover of an Indian farmer by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to the Border Security Force (BSF).

According to official accounts, an Indian farmer named Ranjit Das (65) was recovered from the border area and handed over to the BSF during a flag meeting held between BGB and BSF at around 10:30 pm on Tuesday at the Northkul border. The handover took place through formal procedures agreed between the two border forces.

The incident coincides with growing tension surrounding a separate development involving a Bangladeshi youth, Dipjol (26), who reportedly went missing after crossing into Indian territory early on Monday morning. Dipjol is the son of Ahmed Ali and a resident of Northkul Digaligram area under Barothakuri Union of Zakiganj upazila.

The chairman of Barothakuri Union Parishad, Mohsin Mortuza Chowdhury, confirmed the disappearance. He stated that local residents alleged the youth entered Indian territory early on Monday and that BSF personnel allegedly opened fire at that time, after which he went missing. However, he also noted that the BSF has denied claims of firing.

Following the incident, tensions escalated in the border area. At around 11:00 am on Tuesday, Ranjit Das reportedly arrived near the zero line adjacent to Gate No. 31 of the Kinnakhal Border Outpost (BOP) on the Indian side. At that time, angered relatives of the missing Bangladeshi youth reportedly brought him across to the Bangladeshi side. He was later recovered with the assistance of local residents and the BGB.

Local residents stated that there was widespread anger over the possibility that the missing Bangladeshi youth may have been shot by the BSF, although this claim has not been officially confirmed. The situation contributed to heightened tension in the border area, prompting communication between the BSF and BGB to prevent further escalation.

Subsequently, the 19th Battalion of the BGB, based in Zakiganj, took initiative to stabilise the situation and ensure the safe return of the Indian national. Ranjit Das was later handed back to the BSF through a formal flag meeting, restoring procedural order along the border.

The commanding officer of the Zakiganj Battalion (19 BGB), Lieutenant Colonel Md Zubair Anwar, when contacted, stated that he was attending a meeting at the time and would provide further comments later.
