Sixteen HIV Cases Confirmed in Pabna District Bangladesh

A total of 16 individuals have tested positive for HIV/AIDS in the Pabna District of Bangladesh, with seven of the confirmed cases identified among the homosexual population. These statistics were officially disclosed during a seminar held at the seminar room of Pabna General Hospital on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. The technical data and demographic details were compiled and presented by the representatives of the hospital’s Key Populations (KP) Centre.

The regional workshop, titled “Human Rights and HIV in Bangladesh: Role of Mass Media,” was organised to address the transmission variables and necessary preventative measures within the district. Dr Moniruzzaman, the Focal Person for the Pabna General Hospital KP Centre, alongside Centre Manager Dr Ahsanul Kabir, presented the findings regarding the high-risk demographics. According to their official presentation, the total number of individuals identifying as homosexual within surveyed groups in the district has surpassed 1,600, contributing to an increased risk of HIV transmission across several targeted sub-populations.

High-Risk Demographics and Transmission Vectors

According to the official statistics released by the KP Centre management, specific high-risk populations have been mapped and monitored within Pabna to track the potential spread of the virus. The data identifies various transmission vectors, including intravenous drug users (IDUs), female sex workers (FSWs), male sex workers (MSWs), homosexual individuals, and members of the Hijra (transgender) community. The comprehensive breakdown of identified high-risk individuals in the district is structured as follows:

  • Homosexual Individuals: 1,615 persons have been identified within the district, representing the demographic with the highest number of confirmed HIV infections (7 out of the total 16 cases).

  • Male Sex Workers (MSWs): 908 individuals have been mapped and documented by health authorities.

  • Female Sex Workers (FSWs): 765 individuals are currently recorded within the monitoring framework.

  • Intravenous Drug Users (IDUs): 484 individuals who inject drugs via intravenous methods have been registered.

  • Hijra Community: 110 transgender individuals have been identified and included in the regional health tracking system.

The medical officials emphasized that these specific sub-groups require targeted intervention strategies, health education, and regular screening protocols to manage the transmission rates effectively and prevent further public health complications within the wider population, which includes students and other local communities.

Seminar Dignitaries and Media Engagement

The administrative workshop was attended by prominent medical professionals, regional journalists, and representatives from local press organizations to establish a cooperative framework for public awareness. Among the notable attendees was the Assistant Director of Pabna General Hospital, Dr Rafiqul Hasan, who provided administrative oversight during the proceedings.

The journalism and media community of Pabna was represented by several high-profile figures, including the former President of the Pabna Press Club, ABM Fazlur Rahman, and the current Treasurer of the organization, Abul Kaalam Azad. Additionally, the General Secretary of the Pabna Journalists’ Union, Shamsul Alam, and the Treasurer, Prabir Kumar Saha, participated in the strategic discussions along with numerous field reporters and mass media personnel from across the district. The focal persons concluded the session by outlining the specific institutional responsibilities of the media in disseminating accurate scientific facts regarding HIV prevention while respecting human rights frameworks within Bangladesh.
