Four Stranded Infiltrators Vanish From Kurigram Border

Sumi Akter and her family, who had been stranded at the zero line of the Bangladesh-India border in Roumari Upazila, Kurigram for 96 consecutive hours following a “push-in” attempt by Indian authorities, have disappeared. The family group—comprising Sumi Akter, her husband Billal Hossen, their four-year-old daughter Fatema, and their five-month-old infant daughter Sumaiya—went missing from the international boundary line on Thursday morning. No responsible agency of the Government of Bangladesh has been able to officially confirm their current location or status.

Background of the Border Standoff

The diplomatic and security standoff originally commenced during the early morning hours of Sunday, 14 June, near the international boundary line. Personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) of India, operating from the Jhalorchar camp situated within the Mankachar sector of South Salmara-Mankachar district in the state of Assam, attempted to forcibly push a total of nine individuals into Bangladeshi territory.

The first group of four, consisting of Sumi Akter and her immediate family, alongside two unidentified young men, were directed across the border adjacent to international main pillar 1060 and sub-pillar 1-S. Concurrently, a secondary group comprising three other young men was forced across the frontier via the Mankachar border near the international main pillar 1066 in the Vondurchar area.

However, the coordinated illegal entry was successfully obstructed by personnel from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and a gathering of local residents. Consequently, the nine individuals became completely stranded on the Indian side of the zero line, unable to advance into Bangladesh or retreat into the Indian mainland.

Conditions and the Disappearance Timeline

According to operational logs from the BGB, the stranded family began suffering from acute food shortages and severe malnutrition as the encampment entered its fourth day. At approximately 12:00 am on Wednesday, 17 June, BGB personnel approached the zero line to administer emergency first aid and provide essential food rations to the ailing family. Following this interaction, the four members of the family disappeared from the site before daybreak on Thursday, 18 June.

Journalistic investigations conducted at the frontier verified that two distinct vehicles—a standard BGB patrol vehicle and an unidentified white private automobile—were observed operating near the zero line during the dawn hours. Immediately following the departure of these vehicles, the family was discovered to be missing from their established position. The remaining five young men from the original group of nine continue to remain stranded at the zero line under BGB and BSF surveillance.

Local Testimony and Official Responses

Md Sona Miah, a localized administrative representative and member of the Shoulmari Union Parishad, provided eyewitness testimony regarding late-night cross-border communications. He stated that during the night of Wednesday, he observed physical deployments of both BGB and BSF personnel holding operational flags and engaging in a formal flag meeting directly adjacent to his jute cultivation field. By the following morning, the family had vanished from the location.

Civilian law enforcement authorities have distanced themselves from the incident. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Roumari Police Station, Kawsar Ali, stated that the police administration possesses no verified data regarding the whereabouts or legal processing of Sumi Akter’s family, confirming that the BGB had not transferred the individuals to civil police custody.

Concurrently, the Commanding Officer of the Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, confirmed that his units had crossed slightly towards the Indian boundary line on Wednesday night solely to provide humanitarian medical assistance to the sick family. He noted that regular border patrols resumed on Thursday morning, but maintained that his headquarters possesses no administrative records or information regarding where the family had been transported.

International Protocols on Transnational Border Push-Ins

To provide the necessary structural context to this border emergency, “push-in” or “push-back” operations along the 4,156-kilometre Bangladesh-India international border represent a highly contentious geopolitical issue. Under established bilateral border management agreements signed between the two neighboring states, neither the BGB nor the BSF is permitted to unilaterally deport or force individuals across the international boundary line without formal nationality verification and institutional repatriation protocols.

When suspected illegal migrants or cross-border infiltrators are detained by either nation’s security apparatus, standard operational procedures dictate the holding of a formal sector-level flag meeting. During these sessions, official identity dossiers must be exchanged and evaluated by magistrates before any legal handover can transpire. Unilateral push-in attempts frequently violate international border norms, resulting in volatile standoffs where families become trapped in stateless conditions within the zero-line territory—the geographic strip extending 150 yards on either side of the actual international boundary line.
