A close associate of a Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal leader was shot on Sunday inside a rented apartment in the Chhayanir Residential Area, located under the jurisdiction of the Shahmakhdum Police Station in Rajshahi. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Faisal Badhon, sustained a gunshot wound under circumstances that remain unverified. Following the incident, law enforcement personnel recovered a range of evidence from the scene, including ammunition and a cartridge casing.
According to available information, the incident transpired at approximately 09:30 BST on Sunday, 21 June 2026. Reports indicate that Mir Tareq, a local leader of the Swechhasebak Dal, along with several other individuals, was present at the location when the shooting occurred.
Faisal Badhon is a resident of the Saheb Bazar area within Rajshahi city. He is known to be a close associate of Mir Tareq, who serves as the Convener of the Rajshahi Metropolitan unit of the Swechhasebak Dal, an affiliate organization of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The two individuals are regularly observed participating together in various political programmes, often travelling on the same motorcycle.
Following the shooting, Badhon was urgently transported to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where he underwent immediate surgical intervention.
Dr Shanker Kumar Biswas, the official spokesperson for Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, provided updates regarding the victim’s medical status to members of the press. He confirmed that the patient was admitted to Surgery Ward No. 5 at approximately 11:00 BST.
Surgical Findings: Surgeons successfully extracted a bullet from the patient’s abdomen during the operation.
Ammunition Type: Medical authorities believe the recovered bullet was fired from a pistol.
Current Condition: Attending doctors have stated that the patient is currently out of danger.
Upon receiving information regarding the discharge of a firearm, teams from the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived at the scene to collect forensic evidence.
During the search of the premises, law enforcement officials recovered:
One pistol
One magazine
Live ammunition
A spent cartridge casing
Cocktail-like objects and other explosive substances
The spokesperson and Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Md Gaziur Rahman, stated that the specific details of the incident cannot be disclosed at this stage as the matter is subject to an active, ongoing investigation.
Local sources revealed that the five-storey building where the shooting took place is owned by the father of Sayeed Al Marjukh, who holds the position of Vice-President of the New Government Degree College branch of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. Although the construction of the fifth floor has not been fully completed, Mir Tareq had rented a functional room on that level. This room was regularly used by the metropolitan Swechhasebak Dal convener as a meeting space.
Reports indicate that immediately after Faisal Badhon was shot, Mir Tareq and several other occupants vacated the room and left the premises. Attempts to contact Sayeed Al Marjukh via his mobile phone for comment were unsuccessful as he did not answer, while Mir Tareq’s mobile phone was found to be switched off.
Consequently, the exact mechanism and reasons behind how Badhon was shot remain unconfirmed by both the witnesses and the police.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Gaziur Rahman noted that the precise sequence of events will become clearer once the injured victim is well enough to provide a formal statement.
Based on preliminary assessments of the evidence and the items recovered from the scene, the police suspect that the room was being utilised for illicit or criminal activities. Law enforcement authorities are investigating the case with high priority, and preparations to file a formal police case regarding the incident are currently underway.
