Three Farmers Killed By Lightning Strike In Savar

Three farmers have died after being struck by lightning while working in a vegetable field in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 15:00 BST on Sunday, 21 June 2026, in the Konda area of the upazila. The deaths were officially confirmed by Imran Hossain, the officer-in-charge of the Bhabanipur police camp.

Among the deceased, only one individual has been identified so far, namely 70-year-old Kuti Bepari. The identities and personal details of the other two agricultural labourers could not be immediately ascertained by the authorities at the time of reporting.

Incident Details and Initial Discovery

According to local sources, Kuti Bepari, along with the two agricultural labourers, was engaged in harvesting crops from a vegetable field when the weather deteriorated. As rainfall commenced across the region, a severe lightning strike hit the specific location where the men were working. All three individuals sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene immediately.

Kamrunnahar, a member of the reserved seats for women in the Bhanga Union Parishad, reported that local residents rushed to the vegetable field immediately after the lightning strike occurred. Upon arrival, the villagers discovered the three men already dead on the ground.

Police Response and Contextual Data

Upon being notified of the accident, personnel from the local police department were dispatched to the site. The law enforcement authorities confirmed that members of the security forces are present at the scene of the incident to manage the situation and coordinate the necessary administrative procedures.

The police stated that active efforts are underway to identify the remaining two deceased workers, whose identities remain unknown.

Geographical and Seasonal Context

To provide relevant and verified contextual information regarding the area and the nature of the event:

  • Administrative Division: Savar is an upazila of Dhaka District, located within the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. It is situated approximately 24 kilometres northwest of Dhaka city and serves as a major hub for agriculture, textile manufacturing, and commerce.

  • Geographical Layout: The region features extensive low-lying agricultural plains, where open-field farming is conducted throughout the year. The open nature of these vegetable and paddy fields exposes agricultural labourers to significant environmental hazards during severe weather changes.

  • Seasonal Weather Patterns: June marks the peak period of the southwest monsoon season in Bangladesh. This period is systematically characterized by heavy rainfall, convective storms, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning activity across the country, particularly affecting rural and open agricultural landscapes where tall structures are absent.

  • Lightning Casualties: Open-field farmers and manual labourers represent the demographic most vulnerable to lightning-related accidents in South Asia due to the necessity of outdoor manual labour during the cultivation and harvesting cycles.

The bodies of the deceased remain under the supervision of local authorities while the identification process for the two remaining labourers continues, and preparations for legal and medical formalities are being completed by the police.
