The Government of Bangladesh has ordered the deployment of army personnel in six districts, including the capital Dhaka, amid concerns over political activities surrounding the forthcoming anniversary of the Awami League. According to an urgent directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the deployment will remain in effect from 22 June until 30 June as part of efforts to maintain public order and ensure security.
The emergency notification, issued by the Political-2 Branch of the ministry, stated that army units would be stationed in Dhaka as well as Narayanganj, Gazipur, Gopalganj, Faridpur and Chattogram. Authorities said the decision was taken in response to intelligence assessments indicating the possibility of unlawful gatherings, processions and demonstrations organised by groups whose activities have been prohibited by the government.
Officials expressed concern that such activities could potentially lead to acts of sabotage, public disorder and disruptions to law and order in various parts of the country. The ministry warned that any deterioration in the security situation could result in significant risks to public safety and property.
Under the directive, military personnel will operate in support of the civil administration under the framework known as “Aid to Civil Power”. This arrangement allows the armed forces to assist civilian authorities in maintaining peace and security during periods of heightened concern. The deployment is intended to strengthen the capacity of local law-enforcement agencies and ensure rapid responses to any emerging threats.
The order specifically covers the Dhaka Metropolitan Area, Chattogram Metropolitan Area, Gazipur Metropolitan Area, Narayanganj District, Gopalganj District and Faridpur District. Authorities have instructed the relevant agencies to make the necessary arrangements for deploying an appropriate number of army personnel across these locations.
Government officials emphasised that the primary objectives of the deployment are to preserve peace and order, safeguard public security and protect lives and property. The move comes at a time when authorities are closely monitoring political developments and public gatherings across the country.
