Flash Rally Sparks Political Controversy

A brief but politically charged flash procession linked to a banned faction of the Awami League in Durgapur, Rajshahi, has triggered widespread debate in both administrative and political circles after images and videos of the event circulated on social media.

According to local accounts, a group of approximately 10 to 12 young men carried out a sudden and covert demonstration on Sunday (21 June) along the Foliar Bil area near the Kanpara–Kharkhari road under Durgapur upazila. The participants, reportedly wearing motorcycle helmets and face masks, gathered swiftly, displayed a banner for around five to six minutes, and dispersed just as quickly on motorcycles.

The banner, which bore the inscription “Organised by Rajshahi District Awami League”, prominently featured photographs of several senior political figures, including the former general secretary of the Rajshahi District Awami League and ex-MP for Rajshahi-5, Abdul Wadud Dara, alongside images of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It also carried political slogans such as “Return-02” and “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile”, while calling for the successful observance of the party’s 77th founding anniversary.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as highly brief and carefully orchestrated. One local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the group arrived on motorcycles, stopped near a bridge in the Foliar Bil area, took photographs while holding the banner, and then staged a short procession before heading south. The group subsequently left the area at speed on their motorcycles. The witness also suggested that the individuals appeared to be affiliated with student political activists, although this could not be independently verified.

The incident gained wider attention later that night when photographs and video clips began circulating widely on social media platforms. Several local political figures, including the former upazila chairman and general secretary of the municipal Awami League, Sharifuzzaman Sharif, reportedly shared the visuals on their personal accounts, further amplifying public discussion and speculation.

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed awareness of the matter. The Officer-in-Charge of Durgapur Police Station, Panchanan Sarkar, stated that an investigation is underway to identify those involved. He noted that the use of helmets and face coverings has made immediate identification difficult, and that efforts are ongoing to verify the identities and affiliations of the participants.

The incident has raised questions regarding political activity in the area, particularly given the covert nature of the procession and the references to organised party involvement despite restrictions on such activities.
