A violent altercation stemming from an outstanding grocery store debt has left at least seven individuals, including a woman, injured in Ishwardi Upazila. The incident transpired on Monday afternoon (22 June 2026) in Gorgori village, situated within the Sahapur Union. Several of the casualties are reported to be in a serious condition.
According to local administrative sources and statements from the aggrieved family, the violent clash is linked to a pre-existing legal dispute. On 23 May, Anwar Hossain Bhola, son of Kadam Ali and a resident of Gorgori village, filed a criminal lawsuit against a local grocer, Rahat Ali Pramanik, accusing him of molesting his four-year-old daughter. Following the registration of the case, law enforcement authorities arrested Rahat Ali Pramanik and remanded him in judicial custody.
The family of the detained shopkeeper, Rahat Ali Pramanik, claimed that the confrontation began on Monday afternoon when his wife, Kalpana Khatun, visited Anwar Hossain Bhola’s residence to recover outstanding shop arrears amounting to approximately 5,000 BDT. An argument ensued between the parties during the encounter.
According to Rahat Ali’s family, the argument escalated when Anwar Hossain Bhola, alongside his mother, Runi Begum, and his sister-in-law, Rimi Khatun, physically assaulted Kalpana Khatun. Upon receiving news of the assault, other members of Rahat Ali’s family arrived at the scene, causing a wider clash between the two factions.
The ensuing conflict resulted in injuries to at least seven people, including Faruq Hossain, Abdul Momin, and Tarikul Islam Tushar. The injured individuals were subsequently evacuated to the Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.
The family of Rahat Ali Pramanik further alleged that following the physical altercation, the opposing faction intentionally vandalised and set fire to their own residential property. They asserted that this act of self-arson was executed as a diversionary tactic to frame Rahat Ali’s relatives and misdirect the police investigation. The accusers maintained that they possess video footage documenting the incident of self-inflicted property destruction.
Efforts to contact the accused party, Anwar Hossain Bhola, via telephone to obtain his statement were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained switched off.
