Man Dies After Being Beaten By His Son

A sixty-five-year-old man named Rezaul Karim has died after being struck with a bamboo stick by his son during a domestic dispute in Rajshahi. The incident occurred on Monday, 22 June, at approximately 10:30 am in the Meherchandi Koroitola West Para area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Chandrima Police Station in Rajshahi metropolitan city. Following the fatal altercation, the accused son, identified as Rakibul Karim, fled the scene and remains at large.

Background of the Family Dispute

According to reports provided by the local police and residents of the area, the deceased, Rezaul Karim, and his wife, Anjuara Begum, frequently engaged in domestic arguments over various family matters. These altercations were reportedly a common occurrence within the household. On the morning of Monday, 22 June, another intense argument ensued between the husband and wife, escalating the tension within the home.

During this specific confrontation, their son, Rakibul Karim, chose to intervene in the parental dispute. Rather than de-escalating the situation, Rakibul actively took the side of his mother, Anjuara Begum. As the argument progressed, Rakibul became highly agitated and infuriated. In a fit of anger, he grabbed a bamboo stick and struck his father directly on the head. The force of the blow caused severe, bleeding lacerations, leaving Rezaul Karim critically injured on the spot.

Hospitalisation and Medical Declaration

Immediately after the assault, family members and nearby residents rushed to the aid of the critically injured Rezaul Karim. He was rescued from the scene and transported in haste to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for emergency medical attention. Upon arrival at the hospital, the assistant physicians and the duty doctor conducted an immediate examination of the victim.

Despite the efforts of those who transported him, the duty doctor officially pronounced Rezaul Karim dead. The severe trauma to the head and the subsequent blood loss from the deep wounds were major factors leading to his demise prior to receiving comprehensive medical treatment.

Profile of the Accused Son

The accused, Rakibul Karim, is an alumnus of the University of Rajshahi, where he completed his higher education in the Department of Social Work. After finishing his university studies, Rakibul had been residing at his parental home, where he was actively preparing for various competitive employment examinations and job applications.

Local witnesses stated that immediately after striking his father and witnessing the gravity of the injury, Rakibul did not remain at the residence. He mounted his motorcycle and left the house in haste. His sudden departure left the family and the local community in shock as he completely vanished from the area before law enforcement authorities could arrive.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the announcement of the casualty, the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) were notified, and a team from the Chandrima Police Station was dispatched to the crime scene to secure evidence and interview witnesses. The spokesperson for the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gaziur Rahman, provided official insights into the preliminary findings of the case.

Deputy Commissioner Gaziur Rahman stated that, based on initial assessments and witness accounts, investigators believe the incident was not a premeditated or planned murder. Instead, the death occurred due to the sudden escalation of a domestic dispute, culminating in the fatal blow dealt by the son.

The police spokesperson further confirmed that the official process of filing a formal murder case at the local police station is currently underway. Local residents corroborated that Rakibul fled on a motorcycle immediately after the attack, and police units have initiated targeted raids in various locations across Rajshahi and neighbouring districts to apprehend the fugitive. In the afternoon, following the completion of the required post-mortem examination at the Rajshahi Medical College morgue, the body of Rezaul Karim was formally handed over to his relatives for funeral proceedings.
