An eight-year-old girl has died after slipping from her mother’s grasp and falling into an open roadside drain amidst severe waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall in Cumilla city. The fatal accident occurred on Sunday night at approximately 9:00 pm in the Chhotra Paschimpara Eidgah locality under the jurisdiction of the Cumilla City Corporation.
The deceased child has been identified as Smriti Akhter, aged eight, who was the daughter of Billal Hossain, a resident of the Kaliajuri Badarpur neighborhood within the city.
According to eyewitnesses and local community sources, Smriti had been visiting her maternal grandparents’ house located at the Mofizabad Colony in the Chhotra area to attend her maternal uncle’s wedding celebrations. Following the conclusion of the matrimonial function, the child was returning home accompanied by her mother.
Due to the severe waterlogging across the city streets caused by continuous rainfall, the mother and daughter were unable to secure a rickshaw for their journey. Consequently, they decided to commute back to their residence on foot. While navigating along the footpath, Smriti unexpectedly slipped from her mother’s hand and fell through a gap created by a broken concrete slab into the inundated drainage system below.
Upon witnessing the incident, nearby residents and passers-by immediately initiated an emergency rescue operation. After a search lasting approximately 15 minutes, the child was discovered trapped further down inside the drain network. Although local residents successfully extricated Smriti from the structural system, she was found to be dead upon retrieval.
Local residents stated that drainage renovation and cleaning operations had been underway in that specific locality for a prolonged duration. During this maintenance period, several sections of the drainage infrastructure were left uncovered, and numerous protective concrete slabs remained in a broken condition. The continuous downpour caused a significant accumulation of rainwater on the streets, completely submerging the open channels and fractured structures beneath the waterline.
As a result of this inundation, pedestrians were unable to visually identify or anticipate the hazardous open pits along the walkway. Local citizens alleged that roadside drains across various parts of the city have remained exposed and unprotected for an extended period, effectively turning these open cavities into hazardous traps during monsoon weather. The incident has triggered widespread public anger and grief among the local populace, who are now demanding swift renovation of all hazardous drainage systems and the immediate implementation of safety measures by municipal authorities.
In response to the fatal accident, the Administrator of the Cumilla City Corporation, Yusuf Molla Tipu, officially addressed the situation. He acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident, expressed his official regrets regarding the child’s demise, and gave an assurance that all unprotected drainage gaps across the city would be covered immediately. He also stated his intention to meet with the grieving family to offer necessary administrative support.
