Taraganj Child Murder Arrest Made

Police in Taraganj upazila in Rangpur district have detained an 18-year-old man in connection with the murder of nine-year-old schoolgirl Sanjida Akhter, a case that has sparked widespread concern and public outrage in the locality.

According to police sources, the detainee, identified as Md Mujahid Islam, was taken into custody late on Monday night from his residence in the Bhimpur Koranipara village. He is the son of Md Sekendar Ali and is a local resident of the same area where the incident took place.

The arrest follows an incident that unfolded last Friday, when Sanjida reportedly went missing after leaving her home to play near the vicinity of her residence. Family members, assisted by local residents, conducted extensive searches in surrounding areas throughout the day and into the night, but initially found no trace of the child.

Tragically, on Saturday afternoon, villagers discovered the body of the missing girl in a jute field near the Dalia canal, close to her home. The discovery prompted immediate notification of her family and subsequently the police. Officers from Taraganj Police Station recovered the body from the scene and sent it for necessary legal and medical procedures.

Local residents have claimed that the child’s body bore visible injuries, including trauma to the head and severe damage to the eyes. These accounts have fuelled speculation within the community that she may have been subjected to violence prior to her death, although authorities have not officially confirmed the nature or cause of injuries pending post-mortem findings.

The incident has caused significant unrest in the area, with residents demanding a thorough investigation and swift justice. Community members have called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are identified without delay and brought to justice under the law.

The Officer-in-Charge of Taraganj Police Station, Md Ruhul Amin, stated that Mujahid Islam has been detained for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the murder case. He added that further details would be disclosed after initial interrogation and progress in the inquiry.
