Newborn baby girl found abandoned near Munshiganj hospital dustbin

A newborn baby girl has been rescued alive from an area adjacent to the dustbin of the Gajaria Upazila Health Complex in Munshiganj. The infant was discovered at around 1:30 am on Monday after her cries alerted on-duty nurses and relatives of patients admitted to the facility. Following initial medical attention at the complex, she was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced paediatric care.

The incident has caused a significant stir throughout the hospital and surrounding local community. Authorities remain completely unaware of the identities of those responsible or the motives behind abandoning the child in such a hazardous environment.

According to witnesses and hospital administrative staff, the situation unfolded when individuals on the second-floor veranda of the medical facility heard distinct crying coming from the dark courtyard. Following the sound, a few patient relatives alongside the nursing staff rushed downstairs. They discovered the vulnerable infant wrapped precariously in cloth near the waste disposal site. The team immediately brought the shivering newborn inside to administer emergency warmth and essential medical check-ups.

An on-duty nurse indicated that the physical condition of the baby suggested she had been born earlier that very night. Given the lack of any official birth records matching her at the state facility, administrative officials strongly suspect the delivery took place elsewhere. It is highly probable the birth occurred at a nearby private clinic, diagnostic centre, or an unauthorised domestic setting before the perpetrators chose the hospital grounds as a dumping site.

Dr Saad Karim, an emergency department physician at the Gajaria Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the infant bore a minor injury mark on her head. The hospital quickly notified the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) regarding the development. With the assistance of the local village police, the medical team managed to arrange a secure transfer to the capital, sending the baby to Dhaka Medical College Hospital between 2:30 am and 3:00 am.

Law enforcement agencies have initiated an investigation to trace the biological parents and uncover the circumstances leading to this abandonment. Inspector (Investigation) Sabbir敲Hossain of the Gajaria Police Station stated that official inquiries are actively underway. The police department is collaborating closely with the Department of Social Services and the local upazila administration to ensure the child receives safe custody, proper rehabilitation, and legal guardianship upon her recovery.
