The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning predicting squally winds across nine districts. Inland river ports in the affected regions have been advised to take precautionary measures as winds could reach speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour.
According to the weather bulletin released for internal river ports, the warning remains active from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm on Tuesday. The meteorological office indicated that temporary gusty or squally winds, accompanied by rain or thundershowers, are highly likely to affect several territories. The regions placed under this alert include Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet.
Meteorologists noted that the wind is expected to blow from the south or south-east directions, fluctuating between speeds of 45 and 60 kilometres per hour. Consequently, river ports operating within these specified boundaries have been directed to hoist Cautionary Signal Number One. This measure aims to alert small vessels and trawlers about sudden turbulence in the water channels.
Sudden atmospheric shifts frequently disrupt commuter and commercial transport across the river networks of Bangladesh. Coastal areas and southern districts like Patuakhali, Noakhali, and Cox’s Bazar face higher risks when wind speeds accelerate, as rough waters pose an immediate hazard to local wooden boats and smaller engine-run vessels.
Authorities have advised all boat captains, launch operators, and fishermen navigating these specific southern and eastern waterways to remain vigilant. Operators are urged to monitor the cloud patterns and water conditions closely before embarking on journeys, ensuring passenger safety amidst the unpredictable weather conditions. Security and monitoring have been heightened around the major docking stations to prevent overcrowded vessels from leaving the ports during the designated hours.
