Death Toll Reaches 281 Following Powerful Earthquake in Colombia

Search and rescue operations continued across western Colombia on Thursday, 13 August, as emergency crews worked tirelessly in the wake of a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the region earlier in the week.

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella confirmed the updated casualties on Thursday, revealing that at least 281 people have died. Official figures indicate that 3,971 people suffered injuries, while 379 individuals remain missing under collapsed concrete and debris.

David Santiago Tamayo, Director-General of Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, provided an extensive assessment of the structural ruin. Over 12,000 residential homes were completely destroyed, with more than 74,000 others sustaining severe damage. More than 170 buildings collapsed entirely, while critical transport and utility networks suffered widespread disruption, including damage to 200 roads, 20 road bridges, one pedestrian bridge, five airports, and 44 municipal water supply systems.

Presidential Appeal and International Relief Efforts

Addressing the nation, President De la Espriella declared a national state of emergency and issued an urgent call for international aid, highlighting the immense financial and logistical commitments required for recovery.

“The scale of the destruction is overwhelming,” De la Espriella stated. “Managing this crisis demands extraordinary resolve and political will. We must simultaneously fund the reconstruction of homes across affected zones while providing immediate relief and humanitarian assistance to millions of suffering citizens.”

International support has begun arriving to bolster local response units. The US State Department dispatched a specialized 40-member urban search and rescue team to Colombia to assist frontline crews. Foreign casualties have also been reported, including a woman from Bergenfield, New Jersey, who tragically lost her life when a building collapsed while she was attempting to rescue her daughter.

Severe Impact in Pereira and Cali

The regions of Chocó and Valle del Cauca remain among the hardest hit by the seismic shocks. In Pereira, located within the Chocó zone, emergency personnel pulled a 32-year-old woman alive from the rubble on Wednesday after she spent more than 36 hours trapped beneath heavy debris.

In Cali, a major urban centre in Valle del Cauca with a population exceeding 2.2 million, Mayor Alejandro Eder confirmed at least 95 fatalities. Search teams, supported by troops from the Colombian Army’s Third Brigade, concentrated their efforts in the city’s southern district near the Clínica Colombia health facility, where several residential blocks collapsed.

Military units deployed canine search squads, thermal-imaging drones, and heavy excavation equipment to locate survivors beneath the ruins. Local officials underscored the critical nature of the timeline, noting that every passing minute remains vital in the race to save lives.

Regional Disruption and Historical Context

According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre was located approximately three miles east of San José del Palmar in western Colombia. The Colombian Geological Service confirmed that the tremor represents the most powerful earthquake recorded in the country over the past decade.

The quake was felt across the entire country and triggered tremors in neighbouring Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. In addition to structural destruction, the disaster severely damaged regional infrastructure, causing widespread outages across electricity grids, mobile communications, and internet networks. Search operations, supported by physical searches, technology, and sniffer dogs, continue around the clock as authorities race against time.
