Bangladesh Build Strong Lead After Domination in Darwin Test

Bangladesh maintained control of the Darwin Test against Australia on the second day, despite enduring a sudden late-innings collapse triggered by the home side’s seamers with the new ball. By stumps on Friday, 14 August, the visitors had reached 351 for six in their first innings, building a crucial 153-run lead with four wickets still in hand.

The day’s proceedings were anchored by a magnificent maiden Test century from opener Tanjid Hasan Tamim, whose 101-run knock laid a solid foundation for the visitors. Resuming the morning at 96 for one, Bangladesh dominated the opening two sessions before Australia’s bowling attack struck back sharply late in the afternoon, claiming three quick wickets for just 11 runs.

Tanjid’s Historic Ton and Middle-Order Foundations

Starting the second day on 35 alongside Mominul Haque, Tanjid played with impressive composure against a formidable Australian attack. He became only the second Bangladeshi batsman to score a Test century against Australia, matching the feat accomplished by Shahriar Nafees. Tanjid’s innings spanned 101 runs, featuring eight boundaries and a six, before he was caught by Mitchell Starc off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

Prior to his dismissal, Tanjid featured in several pivotal partnerships that put Bangladesh in a commanding position. After adding 36 runs for the opening wicket with Shadman Islam on the first day, he joined forces with Mominul to construct a vital 102-run stand for the second wicket. Mominul fell just short of a half-century, departing for 49 during the morning session as Bangladesh added 85 runs before lunch.

Tanjid then partnered with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto to add another 93 runs for the third wicket. The team continued its dominant display through the second session, gathering 105 runs for the loss of a single wicket before the tea break.

Late Australian Surge and Unbroken Resistance

Captain Shanto looked poised to follow Tanjid to a three-figure score, driving the innings forward with a fluent 84. However, his dismissal—caught by Steve Smith in the slips off Josh Hazlewood—sparked a brief collapse. Returning from injury, Litton Das was dismissed for a duck, while the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim squandered a promising start, falling for 36.

The triple strike saw Bangladesh slip from a comfortable position into a mini-crisis, losing three key batsmen in the space of 11 runs. Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc were the chief architects of the fightback, taking two wickets apiece while conceding an identical 68 runs each. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon picked up one wicket each to round out the Australian attack.
