The psychological horror film Obsession has made an extraordinary transition to home media after taking the global box office by storm. Produced on a modest budget of just 1 million dollars, the cinematic phenomenon has generated a staggering 344 million dollars worldwide. Following its highly successful theatrical run, the film made its digital debut on Tuesday, becoming available for streaming on the Apple TV+ platform.
The digital release offers an intriguing twist for home audiences. During its initial theatrical release, several intense sequences were removed to comply with strict regulatory guidelines from film classification boards. The filmmakers have confirmed that this new online stream features the unrated cut, restoring the censored scenes. Audiences can now access a longer, more violent, and fully realised version of the narrative, providing a far more intense viewing experience than what was permitted in theatres.
Directed by filmmaker Curry Barker, Obsession opened in United States theatres on 15 May and immediately defied industry expectations. Before this breakout success, Barker was largely an unknown figure in mainstream Hollywood circles. His previous creative output was confined to short films and independent content creation on YouTube. His portfolio included a well-received horror short titled The Chair and a found-footage project called Milk & Serial, which he chose to distribute entirely for free on his public channel. This single cinematic release has radically rewritten his career trajectory, positioning him as a highly profitable director.
The plot of Obsession centres on Bear, an isolated employee working at a local music shop who develops an intense infatuation with his friend, Nikki. Unable to win her affection through conventional means, Bear discovers a mysterious, supernatural toy and uses its eerie powers to manipulate Nikki into falling in love with him. Whilst the arrangement initially appears successful, the situation takes an increasingly sinister turn. Nikki gradually begins to lose her core personality traits, transforming Bear’s desperate desire for affection into a terrifying, psychological nightmare.
Exploring the dark themes of obsession, emotional dependency, and toxic control, the film has sparked widespread discussion amongst critics and horror fans alike. Starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston in the lead roles, Obsession stands as one of the most profitable cinematic achievements of the year, demonstrating that compelling storytelling can outperform major studio budgets.
