Police have arrested a furniture businessman in Bogura on charges of brutally stabbing a stray dog with a sharp weapon. The suspect, identified as Mohammad Swapon, a resident of the Rahmannagar area, was apprehended at around midnight on Monday during a targeted raid in the city’s Bakshebazar area.
The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged at the Bogura Sadar Police Station by Mohammad Emran Hossain, a convener member of the Bogura branch of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association (BAWA). The case was filed under relevant animal cruelty laws earlier on Monday.
According to the case statement, the incident came to light on Monday afternoon when Emran Hossain received information about an injured animal. He rushed to an alley on the western side of the Independent Hospital in the Kanchgari area, where he discovered a black-and-white stray dog lying inside a drainage ditch. The animal had sustained severe lacerations from a sharp object and was bleeding heavily.
With the immediate assistance of two local residents, SM Sadikul Islam and Rafid Yasad, the animal welfare workers managed to rescue the distressed dog from the drain. They transported it to a specialised veterinary care centre in the Jaleswaritana area. Recognising the severity of the injuries, a coordinated medical team comprising officials from the Upazila Livestock Department and the District Livestock Department undertook emergency treatment. Following a complex surgical procedure and intensive medical care, veterinarians confirmed that the dog’s physical condition has since stabilised and is showing signs of improvement.
The complainant alleged that enquiries with local residents revealed Swapon had deliberately and without provocation attacked the defenceless dog with a sharp instrument. The case file noted that the filing of the formal complaint was slightly delayed due to the urgency of securing immediate medical intervention for the animal and consulting with central leaders of the animal welfare organisation.
Confirming the operation, Iqbal Bahar, the Officer-in-Charge of the District Detective Branch (DB) of Police, stated that law enforcement acted swiftly once the criminal case was registered. Officers tracked down the suspect during the night, and legal proceedings are currently underway to produce Swapon before the court to face prosecution under animal protection legislation.
