Three Sentenced Following Narcotics Raid in Galachipa Sub-District

An anti-narcotics operation in the Galachipa sub-district of Patuakhali has resulted in the apprehension and subsequent sentencing of three illicit drug traders. The joint law enforcement operation, conducted on Monday afternoon, culminated in a mobile court handing down jail terms and financial penalties to the offenders after they were caught in possession of cannabis.

The raid was carried out at approximately 5:00 pm under the direct leadership of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate, Abujar Md. Ijazul Haque. Personnel from the Patuakhali District Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), led by a Sub-Inspector, orchestrated the sweep alongside auxiliary law enforcement personnel to target known distribution points within the locality.

Apprehension and Immediate Judicial Sanctions

The administrative authorities identified the convicted individuals as Lalu Howlader, aged 32, Mahin, aged 22, and Moniruzzaman, aged 52. All three men are permanent residents of the Galachipa upazila and were reportedly under surveillance prior to their arrest. According to institutional sources, the anti-drug squad caught the trio red-handed with the contraband during the coordinated surprise drive.

Following their arrest, the suspects were presented before the mobile court presided over by Magistrate Haque. Given the definitive nature of the evidence, the tribunal summary proceedings moved swiftly. Under Section 36(5) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018, each of the three defendants was sentenced to one month of simple imprisonment. Additionally, the court imposed a financial penalty of 200 Taka on each individual, whilst the confiscated cannabis was publicly destroyed in accordance with statutory legal provisions.

This successful intervention comes amidst an intensified nationwide campaign by law enforcement agencies to curb the proliferation of localized drug networks across coastal districts. Patuakhali, owing to its geographical position and riverine transport routes, has increasingly required heightened vigilance from narcotics control officers seeking to disrupt supply chains moving into rural communities.

Confirming the judicial outcomes, Executive Magistrate Abujar Md. Ijazul Haque emphasized that the local administration remains committed to eradicating substance abuse. He noted that law enforcement drives of this nature would continue systematically across the sub-district to dismantle commercial drug syndicates. The magistrate concluded by stating that whilst regulatory crackdowns are essential, achieving a drug-free society fundamentally relies on the proactive cooperation, awareness, and vigilance of citizens at all levels of the community.
