Rising Costs Force Asian Households Into Short-Term Financial Planning

A sharp increase in the cost of living across Asia has fundamentally altered how households manage their money. Families are increasingly prioritising immediate daily expenses over long-term financial security. This shift highlights a growing vulnerability to sudden economic shocks and long-term retirement deficits as inflation continues to squeeze household budgets.

According to a comprehensive regional study published by Sun Life Financial, Inc. (Sun Life Asia), more than half of the population—approximately 55 per cent of households—currently operate with no financial plan or limit their financial planning to a horizon of twelve months or less.

Inflation erodes household resilience

The data reveals that 83 per cent of survey respondents find it significantly harder to meet their basic monthly expenses due to persistent inflationary pressures. David Broom, Chief Client and Distribution Officer at Sun Life Asia, noted that rising living costs are forcing individuals to radically restructure their day-to-day money management. The escalating prices of food, fuel, and essential utilities are placing an unprecedented strain on household budgets.

This financial strain has led to a noticeable decline in regional economic stability. The proportion of households classified as financially resilient dropped sharply to 25 per cent this year, down from 32 per cent twelve months ago. Similarly, the segment of the population feeling fully secure about their personal finances fell from 19 per cent to a mere 13 per cent.

The shortening of financial planning horizons directly compromises the ability of families to withstand sudden disruptions to their income. Should a primary earner face illness or sudden unemployment, approximately 61 per cent of those surveyed admitted they would be unable to cope for more than six months without relying on external financial support.

To bridge the gap between static incomes and rising bills, households are actively modifying their financial behaviour. One in four respondents reported drawing down on their existing savings to cover standard living costs. Meanwhile, 27 per cent are actively cutting back on essential daily spending, and 10 per cent have completely halted their contributions towards retirement savings programmes.

Misalignment between confidence and true preparedness

Separate domestic research conducted in India suggests that subjective financial confidence does not automatically equal actual systemic preparedness. A study released by HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd. focused on the economic habits of working women, revealing a stark disconnect. Whilst the demographic rated their personal financial readiness at a confident 84 out of 100, objective measurements placed their true technical preparedness at just 58.

The findings from HDFC indicated that working women tend to prioritise saving for concrete, immediate milestones such as their children’s education or home ownership. However, fewer than half of the participants felt financially prepared for their eventual retirement.

Vineet Arora, Executive Director and Chief Business Officer at HDFC Life, emphasised that the overall contribution of working women to the family unit extends far beyond raw household income. There remains an urgent requirement for this segment to plan much further ahead to guarantee long-term financial security and preserve their independence during retirement.

Despite these structural challenges, the broader data offers a clear path forward. Sun Life highlighted a strong correlation between basic financial literacy and genuine economic resilience. Households with a firm grasp of financial principles consistently reported greater confidence, reduced levels of daily stress, and a far more positive outlook regarding their long-term economic future.
