One Dead and Ten Injured in Cumilla Highway Collision

A fatal road traffic accident on the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway has resulted in the death of one passenger and left at least ten others injured. The incident transpired during the early hours of Tuesday, 7 July, in the Vipulasar area located within the Monohorganj upazila of Cumilla district.

The casualty has been identified by authorities as 60-year-old Mostafa Kamal, a resident of Kachihata village, situated in the neighbouring Noakhali district.

The Mechanics of the Accident

According to formal statements from local law enforcement, the collision occurred when a Dhaka-bound passenger coach belonging to ‘Nilachal Paribahan’, which had commenced its journey from Noakhali, crashed into the rear of a stationary lorry. The lorry had reportedly suffered a mechanical breakdown and was at a standstill on the carriage way.

The force of the impact caused extensive damage to the structural integrity of the coach, completely crushing its front section. Mr Kamal succumbed to his injuries immediately at the scene of the crash, whilst ten other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity.

Emergency Services Mobilisation

Following the collision, units from the Lalmai Highway Crossing Police Station and the Fire Service and Civil Defence were dispatched to the site to execute a rescue operation. First responders extricated the trapped passengers from the mangled wreckage and facilitated the immediate transfer of the injured to local healthcare facilities for treatment.

Osman Gani, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Lalmai Highway Crossing Police Station, confirmed that legal formalities are currently being processed in relation to the incident.

“Our priority alongside the rescue operation was to prevent prolonged gridlock on this vital economic route. The wreckage was cleared swiftly, and normal traffic flow has been restored,” stated OC Gani.
