Husband Held After Alleged Fatal Attack On Wife

A 30-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband following a domestic dispute in Dinajpur’s Phulbari upazila during the early hours of Tuesday, leaving their three sons traumatised after they reportedly witnessed the killing.

The victim, Kulsum Akter Mimi, was the daughter of the late Abdul Kashem and a resident of Swajanpukur (Bundipara) village in the municipal area. The accused, Manik Hossain, is the son of Abdul Matin of East Gauripara village. Police have taken him into custody in connection with the incident.

According to police and family members, Manik Hossain had been living at his wife’s parental home as a resident son-in-law ever since their marriage. The couple had three sons and had reportedly experienced frequent marital disputes over financial hardship, as Manik was said to have remained unemployed for an extended period. Family sources said the recurring strain over household expenses often led to arguments between the couple.

The fatal incident is reported to have occurred at around 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday. According to investigators and relatives, Kulsum asked her husband to sleep in a separate room after an argument. Manik allegedly insisted on remaining in the same room with her. When Kulsum repeated her request that he move elsewhere, he reportedly became enraged.

Police said the suspect then attacked his wife with a spade. She suffered devastating head injuries, while the blunt end of the implement was also allegedly driven into her chest. She died at the scene before any medical assistance could be provided.

The couple’s children reportedly screamed for help after witnessing the attack, prompting neighbours to rush to the house. Local residents overpowered the suspect and informed the police, who later arrived, recovered the body and took Manik Hossain into custody.

The killing has deeply shocked the local community, with neighbours describing the family as one that had struggled with persistent financial difficulties and frequent domestic disagreements. While disputes within the household were reportedly not uncommon, residents said they had never anticipated such a tragic outcome.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Meherun Nesa, lodged a murder case against Manik Hossain at Phulbari Police Station.

The victim’s eldest son, Al-Amin, made an emotional appeal for justice, saying his father had killed his mother in front of their eyes. He demanded the highest possible punishment under the law.

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif Shah of Phulbari Police Station confirmed that the suspect had been detained from the scene immediately after the incident. He said a murder case had been filed based on the complaint submitted by the victim’s mother. Police completed the inquest before sending the body to the Dinajpur Medical Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. The investigation is continuing, and authorities are expected to proceed with further legal action based on the findings of the inquiry.
