A death row inmate who escaped from Kashimpur Central Prison in Gazipur during a period of unrest has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) following a targeted operation.
According to RAB-1, the fugitive, identified as Lokman, was arrested on Sunday night during a special raid conducted in the Kodda Bazar area under Bason Police Station in Gazipur. The elite force confirmed the arrest in a brief statement issued on Monday.
RAB said the inmate had escaped from Kashimpur High Security Central Prison on 6 August amid the chaotic situation that emerged following the fall of the government. During that period, numerous prisoners unlawfully fled the prison as security was severely disrupted. The unrest also led to incidents of attacks, vandalism and looting within the prison premises, creating significant challenges for law enforcement authorities.
In the aftermath of the escape, prison authorities initiated legal proceedings. Jail Superintendent Lutfor Rahman filed a case over the mass prison break, attacks on the facility and related acts of looting. The investigation was subsequently taken up by RAB-1, its Specialised Company and the operational team from the Gazipur Porabari Camp, which launched a shadow investigation to locate the absconding inmates.
Acting on intelligence gathered during the investigation, RAB officers carried out a special operation that led to the arrest of Lukimuddin, also known as Lokman, aged 54. He has been identified as accused number 80 in the case filed over the prison break and had previously been sentenced to death.
Following his arrest, the convicted inmate was handed over to Konabari Police Station in Gazipur for further legal proceedings, RAB said.
Authorities have continued their efforts to trace and apprehend all prisoners who escaped during the security breach. Law enforcement agencies have maintained surveillance and intelligence-led operations in an effort to ensure that those who fled custody are brought back under the justice system.
The latest arrest comes less than a week after RAB detained three other death row convicts who had also escaped from Kashimpur Central Prison. Those arrests were made on 4 September as part of the same ongoing crackdown.
The recapture of Lokman marks another step in the continuing operation to locate escaped inmates and restore accountability following one of the most significant prison security breaches linked to the unrest earlier this year.
