The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has claimed to have uncovered the motive behind the killing of Rajib Ahmed Rubel, a 40-year-old man whose body was recovered from a rented house in Mymensingh city. Investigators say the victim was allegedly murdered by the four sons of his landlady following an incident in which he reportedly assaulted and sexually harassed their mother during a dispute over his tenancy.
The four accused—Rahmat, 30, Jony, 28, Rocky, 26, and Imraj, 18—have been arrested in connection with the case.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday afternoon, PBI Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman said Rubel had rented a room in the house around a month before the incident. According to investigators, the landlady, Parul, had repeatedly expressed concerns about his behaviour. She allegedly objected to his frequent gatherings with visitors at the property and claimed that narcotics were consumed there. As tensions grew, she informed Rubel that he would have to vacate the premises from the following month.
Investigators said Rubel refused to leave and insisted on remaining in the rented accommodation, leading to an increasingly strained relationship between the tenant and the landlord’s family.
According to the PBI, the situation escalated on Sunday morning when Rubel allegedly kicked the door of the landlady’s room, waking her and one of her sons. A heated argument followed. During the confrontation, investigators allege that Rubel physically assaulted Parul and sexually harassed her.
The PBI believes this incident triggered a violent response from her four sons. Investigators say the brothers later planned an attack and used a Chinese-style axe to strike Rubel in the neck, causing fatal injuries. They then fled the scene.
The investigation suggests that the killing was not a spontaneous act but one carried out after the brothers decided to avenge what they considered an attack on their mother. During interrogation, the arrested suspects reportedly admitted to their involvement and stated that they acted out of anger over the alleged assault and sexual harassment, according to the PBI.
Following the killing, Rubel’s father filed a murder case naming the landlady, three of her sons and a total of eleven individuals as accused, while also including three to four unidentified suspects.
Earlier on Monday, police recovered Rubel’s body with severe neck injuries from the rented house in the Chhatrishbari Colony area of Mymensingh city. He was the son of the late Abdul Hamid and a resident of the Ramakrishna Mission Road area of the city.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations presented by the PBI form part of the ongoing inquiry. As with any criminal investigation, the claims made by investigators will ultimately be subject to judicial examination during the legal process.
