An intense psychological battle has erupted ahead of the highly anticipated World Cup knockout fixture as Egypt prepare to face the reigning world champions, Argentina, for a place in the quarter-finals. The African giants have sent a definitive warning to Lionel Messi’s side, making it clear that they do not intend to play the role of underdogs in this high-stakes encounter.
Egypt secured their place in this round following a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Australia in the Round of 32. It was their talismanic forward, Mohamed Salah, who stepped up under immense pressure to convert the decisive final spot-kick. Aware of the ticking clock on his international career, the Liverpool superstar acknowledged that this tournament could realistically be his final World Cup appearance.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the monumental fixture, Salah emphasised his intense focus. He noted that because he is uncertain if this will be his final World Cup, he has approached every single fixture as if it were a cup final. He added that he considers this upcoming match against the world champions to be the absolute pinnacle of his professional football career.
Egypt’s team director, Ibrahim Hassan, expressed unwavering faith in his star forward’s ability to destabilise the tournament favourites. Pointing to Salah’s stellar club record—including 257 Premier League goals and four Golden Boots—Hassan warned that any complacency from the opposition would prove fatal. He stated that the Egyptian squad is completely unfazed by the presence of Lionel Messi, having instructed his players to simply focus on their own tactical strengths and remind Argentina exactly who they are up against.
The director’s confidence extends well beyond a single individual. In a spirited rallying cry, Hassan remarked that whilst Argentina possess Messi, Egypt boast Salah, an attacker capable of dismantling any defensive line single-handedly. He went on to boldly claim that, in terms of work rate and desire, his squad contains 26 Messis.
On the other side of the pitch, Argentina’s World Cup-winning manager, Lionel Scaloni, has refused to take the African side lightly. Known for his meticulous preparation and respect for his opponents, Scaloni praised Egypt’s journey during his pre-match press conference, describing them as a thoroughly organised team that has earned its place through high-quality football. He noted that another gruelling tactical battle lies ahead, but reiterated that Argentina’s sole objective remains a victory.
Whilst Scaloni does not intend to alter his fundamental tactical philosophy, he dropped strong hints regarding squad rotation. The manager stated that although his starting line-up is decided, he will keep his cards close to his chest to maintain a competitive edge. He indicated that several fresh players who lacked significant minutes in earlier rounds might be introduced to provide much-needed physical energy.
Reflecting on Argentina’s flawless run of four consecutive victories in the tournament, Scaloni remained critical of his team’s defensive transitions. He pointed out that during their previous encounter against Cape Verde, a sudden lack of defensive pace allowed the opposition to retain possession too easily. Emphasising his preference for an aggressive, high-tempo defensive style, Scaloni concluded that his players must maintain absolute tactical discipline to neutralise the specific threats posed by Egypt.
