Two political leaders from the National Nationalist Party (NCP) have been caught red-handed by law enforcement officers in Dinajpur whilst attempting to collect a substantial ransom payment. The sting operation resulted in the successful rescue of a middle-aged kidnap victim. Following the initial arrests, a group of party loyalists descended upon the local police station to demand the release of their leadership, leading to a physical altercation with the police and the subsequent arrest of three additional suspects. All five individuals have been formally charged with abduction and extortion.
According to Inspector Nurunnabi, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station, a local magistrate remanded the five suspects to the district jail on Tuesday. The primary suspects have been identified as Arif Mun, the central organising secretary of the Jatiya Jubo Shakti (the NCP’s youth wing), and Hasing Israk Mim, 22, whom police identify as a member of the NCP Dinajpur district committee. The remaining three individuals arrested during the police station fracas are Minaj, 29, Prem, 22, and Hridoy Islam, 22.
The case began on Sunday night when Abdus Samad, a 58-year-old resident of Khosalpur village in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila, was forcibly abducted from his residence by an unidentified group. Shortly after the abduction, the perpetrators contacted Samad’s family and demanded a hefty ransom of 1.5 million Taka for his safe release. Following intense negotiations, the kidnappers eventually agreed to lower their demands, settling for a payment of 400,000 Taka.
The criminals instructed the victim’s son, Md Mamun, to bring the cash to the microbus stand at the Gor-e-Shahid Boromath area on Monday afternoon. Unbeknownst to the extortionists, Mamun had already alerted the local authorities. Plainclothes officers set up a perimeter around the designated drop-off point and waited for the suspects to arrive. When Arif Mun and Hasing Israk Mim approached to collect the ransom bag, officers swarmed the location, arresting both men on the spot and rescuing Abdus Samad from the back of a nearby private car.
The drama intensified later that evening at the Kotwali Police Station. Upon hearing news of the arrests, a group of NCP and Jubo Shakti activists entered the station premises to lobby for the immediate release of their detained leaders. The confrontation quickly degenerated into a physical scuffle as the activists attempted to obstruct the officers from performing their duties. Police personnel managed to restore order, taking Minaj, Prem, and Hridoy Islam into custody for their part in the disturbance.
On Monday night, Md Mamun filed a formal criminal case against the five detained individuals, alongside 10 to 12 unnamed suspects. Word of the politicians’ involvement in the kidnapping scheme spread rapidly across the town, prompting a large crowd of local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists to gather outside the police station to voice their outrage and demand a rigorous investigation. The political gathering created significant friction, forcing authorities to disperse the crowd and remove all remaining NCP sympathisers from the immediate vicinity to prevent further clashes.
Reflecting on the underlying motives behind the abduction, OC Nurunnabi noted that preliminary enquiries point toward a pre-existing dispute regarding financial transactions. He added that a formal case has been registered based on the victim’s complaint, and a thorough investigation will clarify the precise nature of the financial disagreement. Meanwhile, the convener of the district NCP, Shamsul Muktadir, attempted to distance the party from the controversy, asserting that the young suspect, Hasing Israk Mim, was never an official member of their district committee. Muktadir emphasised that the party supports a completely neutral investigation, stating firmly that anyone found guilty of a crime must face the full consequences of the law.
