Torrential Rainfall and Landslides Displace Thousands of Rohingya Refugees

Torrential downpours across Chittagong Division and Cox’s Bazar district have triggered extensive flash flooding, severe waterlogging, and deadly landslides, leaving more than 16,000 Rohingya refugees severely affected. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) disclosed the figures on Tuesday, 7 July, highlighting the growing humanitarian crisis in the vulnerable, hilly encampments.

According to data compiled by the Refugee Coordination Platform (RCP) Daily Incidents Dashboard, the adverse weather conditions caused the tragic deaths of at least ten Rohingya refugees between 4 July and the morning of 7 July, whilst leaving another ten injured. The severe weather system has completely destabilised the fragile landscape. The agency confirmed that 15,813 individuals have suffered direct losses, with 3,182 refugees forced out of their shelters into temporary displacement.

Severe Structural Damage and Weather Alerts

The relentless monsoon rains have culminated in approximately 160 distinct climate-related incidents within the camps over the four-day period. This tally comprises 52 separate landslides, 14 instances of flash flooding, and 83 high-velocity windstorms. The structural toll on the basic infrastructure of the settlements has been devastating. A total of 1,614 refugee shelters have been partially destroyed, while 10 structures were entirely demolished by the elements.

The Cox’s Bazar weather station, operated by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), recorded 129 millimetres of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 6:00 pm on 7 July. Due to this saturated topsoil, maritime authorities have maintained a local cautionary signal number three across the critical ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra. The BMD has explicitly warned that the current synoptic weather pattern is likely to dump heavy to very heavy precipitation across the broader Chittagong Division for at least another 48 hours, vastly increasing the probability of secondary hill slides.

Emergency Response Strained Under Continued Risk

Humanitarian organisations operating on the ground have mobilised crisis teams to carry out emergency rescues, distribute food rations, provide critical medical aid, and deliver temporary shelter materials. However, rescue and rehabilitation efforts face immense logistical difficulties due to muddy terrain and flooded access roads.

The immediate danger has far from subsided. With the meteorological office predicting an extension of the heavy downpours, aid agencies remain on high alert for further environmental disasters. The combination of deforested hillsides, densely packed bamboo-and-tarpaulin structures, and inadequate drainage networks continues to expose the refugee population to disproportionately high risks during the peak of the annual monsoon season.
