Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have seized a massive cache of smuggled Indian goods, including cumin seeds, tea leaves, and sugar, valued at over ten million Taka during separate raids along the Sylhet border. The operations, executed by the Jakiganj Battalion (19 BGB), also resulted in the impounding of three transport vehicles used by smugglers. A press release issued by the battalion on Wednesday, 8 July, confirmed the details of the law enforcement success.
Acting on precise intelligence, BGB tactical units operating under the Sylhet sector launched coordinated operations across vulnerable border points. A specialised patrol team from the Laxmibazar Border Observation Post (BOP) in Jakiganj upazila intercepted a major consignment left abandoned by fleeing smugglers near the frontier line.
During this specific raid, officers recovered 1,200 kilograms of Indian cumin seeds and 2,000 kilograms of tea leaves. Three Bangladeshi-registered DI pickup trucks, used to move the contraband into the interior of the country, were also seized. The combined estimated value of the confiscated goods and vehicles from the Jakiganj sector alone stands at 10.4 million Taka.
In a parallel development on the same day, BGB units carried out subsequent raids across the neighbouring Jaintapur and Kanaighat upazilas to dismantle active smuggling corridors. Patrolling squads from the Jaintapur, Suraighat, and Lobhachhara BOPs managed to intercept another series of abandoned shipments.
This second phase of the operation netted 718 kilograms of Indian sugar, one live buffalo, 102 kilograms of tea leaves, and 86 bundles of betel leaves. BGB officials estimated the market value of these specific items at 361,325 Taka. Across both days of intense anti-smuggling drives, the total value of the seized goods reached 10,761,325 Taka.
The Sylhet border region remains a historically challenging zone for customs enforcement due to its porous nature and difficult terrain, which cross-border syndicates frequently exploit to bring in unauthorized goods. The BGB stated that intelligence gathering and aggressive anti-contraband operations have been intensified to protect the national economy. Formal legal procedures are currently underway to hand over all seized commodities and vehicles to the state customs authorities.
