Sudden Tornado Wreaks Havoc Across Coastal Sandwip Upazila

A powerful tornado has swept through Sandwip Upazila in Chittagong, causing extensive damage to residential properties and business installations. The sudden weather event ripped through a coastal village, destroying a retail shop, a commercial brick kiln, and damaging scores of homes. Fortunately, despite the structural devastation left in its wake, local authorities have confirmed that no casualties or major injuries were reported.

The twister struck Adarshapara village, located within Ward 8 of the Magdhara Union, at approximately 11:30 am on Thursday, 9 July. Eyewitnesses reported that the sky darkened rapidly before a fierce funnel cloud descended upon the locality. A one-minute video capturing the violent phenomenon quickly circulated across various social media platforms. The footage depicted corrugated tin roofs, fences, and various lightweight structures being lifted effortlessly into the air by roaring vortex winds. The harrowing audio captured the panicked screams of women and children fleeing their homes to seek sturdier shelter.

Following the disaster, Kausar Ahmed, the former chairman of Magdhara Union Parishad and joint convenor of the Sandwip Upazila Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), visited the affected site to assess the situation. He observed that the sheer force of the wind had completely blown away the roofs of 20 to 25 residential houses, leaving families exposed to the elements. A local shop was entirely dismantled, with its structural walls, roof, and inventory scattered across the area. Ahmed noted that his own commercial brick kiln also sustained significant structural damage during the brief but intense storm.

The local leadership has formally briefed the upazila administration regarding the extent of the destruction. Emergency assessment teams are being coordinated to pinpoint the exact financial and physical losses suffered by the villagers. Administrative officials have assured the community that comprehensive damage verification will be completed swiftly, allowing for the distribution of necessary relief materials, building supplies, and financial assistance to the displaced families. This unusual weather pattern has heightened anxiety across the vulnerable island upazila, where residents regularly battle seasonal monsoon elements.
