A twenty-two-year-old man was found dead inside the lockup of Nikli Police Station in Kishoreganj under tragic circumstances. The deceased, Rubel Mia, was the only son of Raja Hawladar, a resident of the Shaharmul locality within the Karapasha Union of the upazila. The discovery of the body has raised serious questions regarding station-level custody monitoring protocols.
According to police and family sources, Rubel had developed a severe substance addiction at an early age. Desperate to rectify his son’s destructive behaviour and constant mistreatment of family members, his father had previously filed a formal legal complaint against him. That case resulted in a three-month prison sentence. However, the period of incarceration failed to reform the young man, who relapsed into addiction shortly after his release from prison.
The situation escalated on Thursday morning, 9 July, when Rubel’s aggressive behaviour at home forced his father to contact the local authorities once more. Since an outstanding court warrant had already been issued in connection with the prior family lawsuit, law enforcement officers moved quickly to apprehend him. Rubel was arrested at his home at approximately 9:00 am and placed inside a holding cell at the Nikli Police Station.
His father, Raja Hawladar, had personally visited the police station shortly after the arrest to drop off food and clean clothing for his son. He was on his way back home when he received the devastating news of Rubel’s sudden demise.
Mahbubur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nikli Police Station, confirmed the details of the incident. He stated that the duty officers discovered Rubel hanging from the iron grille of the lockup cell at around 10:00 am, just as preparations were being finalised to escort him to the local court. Investigators believe that Rubel used his own shirt to fashion a makeshift noose to end his life.
The local police administration has confirmed that formal legal proceedings have been initiated to investigate the custody death, with the body being sent to the regional morgue for an official post-mortem examination.
