A female suspect who escaped from police custody by breaking a window grille at the Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station has been re-arrested in Dhaka. Law enforcement officers apprehended her at around 5:30 am on Saturday during a raid in the Jiyanagar area under the Keraniganj Model Police Station.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Hasina Begum, is the daughter of Hobi Howlader from Thantoli and the wife of Al-Amin from Kalaimara. She had previously escaped custody on Thursday night at around 1:30 am, triggering an intensive police search.
According to police and local sources, Hasina was initially detained on Thursday evening by officers from the Iterpul police outpost over her alleged involvement in anti-social activities. Following her arrest, she was transferred to the Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station.
The station is currently operating out of a temporary office on the ground floor of the Officer-in-Charge’s official residence whilst the main station building undergoes reconstruction. Because this makeshift facility lacks a proper cell block, Hasina was detained in a room located on the veranda. Taking advantage of the structural limitations of the temporary setup, she managed to break the iron grille of the window and escaped into the night unnoticed.
Following her escape, the Madaripur police launched an investigation and tracked her movements to Dhaka using tracking technology. A specialised team from the Sadar Model Police Station conducted a coordinated operation in Keraniganj to take her back into custody.
Hasina was brought back to Madaripur at 12:30 pm on Saturday and produced before a court an hour later, where the magistrate ordered her to be sent to prison. Sub-Inspector SM Shahariar confirmed the details to our representative, adding that a new criminal case has been registered against Hasina for escaping lawful custody.
The security breach has caused significant embarrassment within the regional police administration. On Friday, the Superintendent of Police, Mo. Habibur Rahman, withdrew Sub-Inspector Ramzan Ali and another constable from their duties, attaching them to the police lines for professional negligence.
Furthermore, a three-member inquiry committee, headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Fariha Rafeqna, has been formed to investigate the administrative lapses. The committee has been ordered to submit a comprehensive report detailing the security failures within three working days.
