Police in Tangail have cracked a high-profile, initially motiveless murder case with the arrest of five suspects, including a mother and her son. The arrests follow investigations into the killing of a local businessman in Quizbari village, Tangail Sadar Upazila. Details of the breakthrough were shared by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tangail Sadar Police Station, Golam Mokhtar Ashraif Uddin, during a press briefing on Saturday afternoon.
The suspects have been identified as Mst Honufa Begum, 38, widow of the late Shawkat Ali; her son, Mohammad Humayun, 22; Noor Mohammad, 26, and Mohammad Babu, 28, both sons of the late Anwar Hossain; and Mohammad Aynal Haque, 55, son of the late Rustam Ali. Honufa Begum and her son reside in the Quizbari West Para area, whilst the other accomplices are from the neighbouring South Para and West Para areas.
According to police sources, the victim, Masud Rana, had been involved in an extramarital relationship with Honufa Begum for a considerable period. The situation escalated dramatically when Honufa’s sons discovered the affair. Driven by anger and a perceived threat to family honour, a plot was orchestrated to eliminate the businessman.
The breakthrough came after the recovery of Masud Rana’s body on 5 July. Initially, investigators faced a complete lack of clues. However, following a thorough analysis of intelligence and local statements, detectives detained Honufa Begum on suspicion of involvement. Under interrogation, she confessed to her part in the crime and provided critical information that led to the subsequent arrests of her son and their neighbours during coordinated raids across the district.
OC Golam Mokhtar Ashraif Uddin stated that the five suspects were produced before a Tangail court on Friday, where they recorded their confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Following their admissions, the magistrate ordered them to be remanded in judicial custody. Law enforcement officers have also recovered a blood-stained hammer, believed to be the primary weapon used in the assault. Further police investigations are underway to ensure all aspects of the conspiracy are documented for the forthcoming trial.
