Bangladesh’s gross foreign exchange reserves have risen to $36.55 billion, reflecting a steady improvement in the country’s external financial position, according to the latest data from the central bank.
The country’s total foreign currency reserves stood at $36.546 billion, or $36,546.14 million, as of Monday, 13 July, Bangladesh Bank data showed.
However, when measured under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual-6 (BPM-6) methodology, which is considered a more internationally comparable measure, Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves were recorded at $31.907 billion, or $31,907.03 million, during the same period.
The difference between the gross reserve figure and the BPM-6 calculation is largely due to variations in accounting methods. The IMF’s BPM-6 framework excludes certain reserve-related assets that do not immediately meet the criteria for usable foreign currency assets, providing a more conservative assessment of a country’s reserve position.
The increase in foreign exchange reserves comes at a time when Bangladesh has been closely monitoring its external sector stability amid global economic uncertainty, higher import costs and pressure on foreign currency markets. Reserves play a crucial role in supporting the country’s ability to pay for essential imports, including fuel, food products, industrial raw materials and capital machinery.
A stronger reserve position also helps improve confidence among international investors, credit rating agencies and development partners. It provides a cushion against external shocks, particularly fluctuations in global commodity prices, exchange rate volatility and changes in international financial conditions.
Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves have experienced fluctuations in recent years due to increased import payments, global inflationary pressures and efforts to stabilise the exchange market. The authorities have taken various measures to strengthen the external balance, including improving remittance flows, encouraging export growth and managing foreign currency demand.
The latest reserve figures indicate some improvement in the country’s foreign currency position compared with periods of heightened pressure. Remittances from Bangladeshis working abroad, export earnings and foreign investment inflows remain key sources of foreign exchange for the economy.
Economists consider maintaining an adequate level of reserves essential for ensuring macroeconomic stability. A healthy reserve position enables a country to meet international payment obligations while maintaining confidence in its currency and financial system.
Although the gross reserve figure has crossed the $36 billion mark, policymakers continue to focus on strengthening long-term foreign exchange stability by boosting export competitiveness, increasing remittance inflows through formal channels and maintaining prudent economic management.
The latest figures from Bangladesh Bank suggest that the country’s foreign currency reserves are gradually regaining strength, providing a measure of support for the broader economic recovery efforts.
