Former Member of Parliament and senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Ahmed has passed away at the age of 76. He breathed his last at 8:10 pm on Tuesday, 13 October, while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
His son, Tanveer Ahmed Robin, who serves as the member secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of the BNP, confirmed his father’s passing in a poignant social media post. Sharing the news, Robin wrote that his father had returned to his Creator at Evercare Hospital and requested prayers from the public for the departed soul.
According to family sources, the funeral arrangements have been finalised. The first Namaz-e-Janaza for the veteran politician will be held on Wednesday following the Zuhr prayers at Lal Masjid in the Shyampur-Kadamtali area of the capital, prior to his burial in a local graveyard.
Salahuddin Ahmed was a prominent figure in the political landscape of South Dhaka, representing both the Dhaka-4 and Dhaka-5 parliamentary constituencies during his distinguished tenure in national politics. Over several decades, he built a strong grassroots presence across the Shyampur, Jatrabari, and Kadamtali neighbourhoods, serving as a key coordinator for party operations in the capital.
Throughout his career, he remained deeply involved in street movements and political campaigns, facing multiple incarcerations alongside fellow opposition leaders during various political anti-government demonstrations.
Senior BNP leaders and grassroots activists expressed deep grief over the loss, visiting the hospital to offer condolences to the bereaved family. Local party offices across Dhaka Metropolitan South declared a period of mourning, acknowledging his contribution as an influential organiser and long-standing voice in opposition politics.
