Over One Thousand Fishermen Booked After Raiding Netrakona Police Outpost

NETRAKONA — Police have initiated a massive criminal case against 1,165 local fishermen following a daring raid on a rural police outpost where a mob forcibly snatched confiscated illegal fishing nets and boats. The escalation occurred at the Adarshanagar police investigation centre under Mohanganj upazila, nestled within the expansive wetlands of Netrakona district, highlighting the growing volatility surrounding local fishing regulations and territorial water rights.

Law enforcement personnel confirmed that the incident has led to the formal arrest of two young fishermen, identified as Zakir, 22, and Mamun, 24, both residing in the Maghan Kurerpar neighbourhood of the upazila. Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan, the primary investigating officer from the Mohanganj Police Station, verified the legal actions on Tuesday, stating that the apprehended suspects have already been produced before the judicial courts while attempts to track down the remaining fugitives intensify.

Seizure and the Subsequent Outpost Raid

The friction originated on Saturday afternoon when an enforcement team from the Adarshanagar police investigation centre conducted a targeted sweep across Dingapota Haor, a vast and ecologically vital wetland. During the operation, officers discovered and impounded two traditional wooden trawlers along with four massive, strictly prohibited Khana nets. Each of these specialised monofilament gillnets measured an astonishing 2,500 feet in length, engineered to trap marine life indiscriminately. The seized maritime assets were subsequently towed back to the police compound for secure storage.

The coordinated assault on a state security installation marks a severe breakdown in local order, driven by systemic resource friction within the seasonal wetlands.

The situation took a lawless turn the following afternoon, on Sunday, when a mobilised crowd comprising hundreds of aggrieved fishermen descended upon the Adarshanagar facility. Outnumbering the station guards, the aggressive collective overran the premises, reclaimed the impounded vessels alongside the destructive Khana nets, and successfully retreated back into the intricate delta channels. A subsequent retaliatory raid by police units on Monday managed to track down and recover only one of the stolen 2,500-foot nets from the waters.

Political Conservation Schemes Versus Local Survival

The legal filing, submitted formally by the Adarshanagar investigation centre chief, Sub-Inspector Russel Parvez, names 65 specific individuals as ringleaders whilst levying charges against an additional 1,100 unidentified suspects. The underlying cause of the riot is rooted in a highly sensitive conservation programme initiated across the interconnected wetlands of Madan, Mohanganj, and Khaliajuri upazilas.

Supported by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, alongside local members of parliament, authorities recently released 75,000 hatchery-bred fish fingerlings into the haor ecosystem. To ensure the survival and growth of these juvenile stocks, the administration issued a strict regional directive requesting local fishing syndicates to completely abstain from deploying fine-mesh Khana nets, which threaten to wipe out the newly introduced populace before maturity.

Local fishing communities, however, remain vehemently opposed to the extension of these restrictions. Representatives from the community argue that the official governmental ban on seasonal fishing expired on 28 June, meaning they are legally authorised to resume their trades to sustain their livelihoods. This discrepancy between state-enforced conservation targets and the economic survival of the artisanal fishermen has triggered severe altercations between local fishing clusters and influential state actors.

Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan re-emphasised that the ongoing criminal investigation would proceed without compromise. Senior upazila administrators have similarly maintained that despite structural pushback and civilian unrest, targeted anti-netting campaigns will continue unabated to protect the region’s indigenous biodiversity and long-term ecological wealth.
