Remembering Rashid Haider’s Enduring Literary Legacy

Rashid Haider remains one of the most respected figures in Bangladesh’s literary and intellectual history. A distinguished author, researcher, journalist, editor and cultural personality, he devoted his life to literature while making an extraordinary contribution to documenting the history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War. His work continues to influence scholars, writers and readers alike, securing his place among the country’s most significant literary voices.

Although widely known as Rashid Haider, his full name was Sheikh Faisal Abdur Rashid Mohammad Ziauddin Haider. Affectionately called Dulal by family and close associates, he was born on 15 July 1941 into the renowned Haider family of Dohapara village in Pabna District.

Haider’s literary career was remarkably diverse. He wrote fiction, novels, plays, essays, memoirs and translations, while also editing and compiling numerous publications. Across several decades, he authored and edited more than seventy books. His greatest distinction, however, lay in his painstaking efforts to preserve documentary evidence of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. Through years of meticulous research, collection and editorial work, he helped safeguard invaluable historical records that remain essential references for future generations studying the nation’s struggle for independence.

His contribution extended well beyond creative writing. Haider believed that literature and history should complement one another, and his research reflected a commitment to factual accuracy and historical preservation. His publications on the Liberation War earned widespread respect within academic, literary and cultural circles, reinforcing his reputation as one of Bangladesh’s foremost researchers in the field.

These achievements brought him numerous national honours. He received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in recognition of his outstanding literary contributions and was later honoured with the prestigious Ekushey Padak, one of Bangladesh’s highest civilian awards. His list of accolades also included the Humayun Qadir Award, the Agrani Bank Literary Award and several other distinctions acknowledging his lifelong service to literature, research and culture.

Haider’s academic journey was equally distinguished. He completed his Secondary School Certificate from Gopalganj Institution in 1959 before earning his Higher Secondary Certificate from Pabna Edward College in 1961. In 1965, he completed a Master’s degree in Bengali Literature at the University of Dhaka, laying the academic foundation for a career that would bridge journalism, literature and historical research.

While studying at university, he entered journalism under the encouragement of his elder brother, the celebrated dramatist Zia Haider. He began working for the popular weekly magazine Chitrali, gaining valuable experience in the country’s media landscape. In 1964, he served as Assistant Editor of Parikrama, the official publication of the Pakistan Writers’ Guild, an appointment that further strengthened his standing in literary journalism.

In 1972, shortly after Bangladesh gained independence, Haider joined Bangla Academy, the country’s premier institution for the promotion of Bengali language and literature. Over the following decades, he held several important positions before retiring in 1999 as one of the Academy’s Directors. His commitment to cultural development continued after retirement when he assumed the role of Executive Director of the Nazrul Institute, where he contributed to the preservation and promotion of the works and legacy of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Rashid Haider passed away on 13 October 2020, bringing to a close an illustrious career dedicated to literature, scholarship and cultural preservation. Yet his passing did not diminish his influence. His books, research and editorial work continue to serve as invaluable resources for readers, historians and researchers seeking to understand Bangladesh’s literary evolution and the documented history of its Liberation War.

On the anniversary of his birth, Rashid Haider is remembered with profound respect and gratitude. His unwavering commitment to preserving historical truth, enriching Bengali literature and nurturing Bangladesh’s cultural heritage ensures that his legacy will endure for generations to come.
