Police have arrested Mostak Ahmed Shahin, a former leader of the Bhola District unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in connection with a case relating to the alleged vandalism of a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) office in 2019.
According to police, Shahin was arrested during a joint overnight operation carried out at around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 15 July, at his residence in Ward No. 8 of Bhola Municipality.
The operation was conducted jointly by officers from Bhola Sadar Model Police Station and the district’s Detective Branch (DB). Law enforcement officials said the arrest was made in connection with a criminal case filed over an incident in 2019 involving the alleged vandalism of the Bhola District BNP office.
Police stated that the accused had been wanted in relation to the investigation into the case. The joint operation was launched during the early hours of the morning, leading to his arrest without public disturbance.
Speaking about the development, Bhola Sadar Model Police Station’s Investigation Inspector, Ziauddin Ahmed, confirmed that Shahin was produced before a court in Bhola on Wednesday morning following his arrest. After hearing the matter, the court ordered that he be sent to judicial custody pending further legal proceedings.
The 2019 vandalism case relates to allegations of damage caused to the district office of the BNP, one of Bangladesh’s major political parties. Although the incident occurred several years ago, legal proceedings connected to the case have continued, with law enforcement agencies carrying out investigations and executing arrests of individuals named in the case where necessary.
Police have not disclosed whether additional suspects are expected to be arrested as part of the same investigation. Nor have investigators publicly commented on the current stage of the case or whether further charges may be brought.
The arrest comes as authorities continue to pursue individuals accused in pending criminal cases linked to political violence and vandalism. Such cases often remain under judicial consideration for extended periods, depending on the progress of investigations, the availability of evidence, and subsequent court proceedings.
Officials have emphasised that the legal process will continue in accordance with the law. Following the court’s order, Shahin will remain in judicial custody while the case proceeds through the criminal justice system. No official statement has yet been issued on his behalf regarding the allegations.
